wiring problems!

I'm trying to sort out a wiring problem. I tried start it after this winter, battery was low but on trickle over winter. She groaned a couple times, then went dead. I put batt on charger for a couple days, get 12.6 volts. I found a couple of bear spots in lead wires, repaired those. Now I can turn ignition to accessory and speedo lights up. Try turning ignition switch to start, no lights, no nothing. I've tried going through the harness looking for any other bare spots. After 16 years is it time to re-wire?

I would think that even if the battery wouldn't handle a start load the headlights should come on. And I did test that by applying current to the head light circuit. I can get the tail lights to come on if I disconnect the main lead off the ignition switch. Which tells me something is tripping the circuit breaker after the switch.
My original problem with the bike going cold was the ground wire at the ignition module...which someone thought it was a grand idea to put it under the module. Pain in the ass to get to, so I added some wire and run it up under the ignition switch.

You might have a bad key switch.

It doesn’t make much sense that your wiring “went bad” over the winter. Unless it was just the ones where you found the bare spots. Those might have corrosion under the insulation that adds resistance and might in fact be “bad”.

The key switch however, has contacts that may have corroded over the winter. But it could be just a bad connection at the battery, or any of the harness connections, or just a bad battery. Maybe the tender boiled all the water out of the battery over the winter.

Taking the battery out and getting it tested is probably the most simple thing you can do, and it’s usually free.
