so , here goes . I have a 2001 Mastiff . its spitting & sputtering & speedo not working . im not a mechanic . my mechanic gave up on my bike & called sat & told me 2 come pick up my bike . said he was done tryin 2 figure out wat is wrong with it . so i went & got it . ive ben reading some of the blogs . i have also done some calling @ & found a guy 3 hrs away that said alls he has 2 do is put a new ignition system on it & itll work & run just fine . hes actually tryin 2 talk me out of rewireing the whole bike with a Harley or revtech wireing harness . i guess my question s r , wat would some of u long time owners do ? will just the ignition work ? or should i keep lookin 4 some1 2 rewire it with a new wireing harness . i don't want 2 sell my bike .i want it fixed , but i don't want it 2 keep messing up every other week

Ok guys, I just talked with Mike on the phone to try to figure out exactly what his situation is. Ignition systems aren't my strong point, so help me out here. Would a cam sensor going bad or out of adjustment cause the bike to pop and sputter? He said the mechanic rebuilt the carb, so I'm not ruling that out completely. It still has the stock Thunder Heart Ignition in it. And if it is the coil, what coil will fit in there.

Absolutely! The 01 will have a cam sensor it's very possible that A) it's just flat out bad or B) positioned incorrectly so timing is off.

Basics right! Fluid, Spark and Compression. Fluid appears okay (rebuilt carb, unless he's a terrible mechanic it should be good enough to run). Next item is spark!

And this is the second "mechanic" I have heard giving up on the bikes. WTF is wrong with these so called mechanics, I'm not sure how you can call yourself a mechanic. Big dogs aren't rocket science they work like every other bike.

Who is the mechanic 3 hrs away? Anyone we know? At least that way we will know it will get fixed up right. Talking him out of a rewire sounds like a reputable mechanic.

Check your fuel spitting and sputtering could be residue from the gas tank.
Stock air filter?

I was leaning toward the cam sensor. On the 01, he can replace that with a Harley cam sensor? Correct? And how do you set it?

Like Paul said his tank liners may be failing and may have the screen plugged and it is not getting enough gas. On my bike someone did away with the Thunderheart ignition a nd replaced it with an aftermarket one. I am not sure which one I would have to look later. But wiring wise it was not that big of deal. I think there are only three wires going to it.

I know the wiring is no big deal, I can walk him through that. We just want to make sure he needs it first.
I didn't think about the tank liner, That would be the first thing to look at.

Mike, look in your fuel tank, and see if the liner has come loose. Then drain the fuel from your tank, and pull the petcock and see if the screen has a bunch of shit on it.
Let us know what you find.

ur rite i would b more comfortable having a real mechanic look at it .like i said i am no mechanic . i don't have the tools or the gararage or area to take it apart . im trying 2 find 1 somewere closer , but im having trouble finding some1 that will work on Big Dogs .

And this is the second "mechanic" I have heard giving up on the bikes. WTF is wrong with these so called mechanics, I'm not sure how you can call yourself a mechanic. Big dogs aren't rocket science they work like every other bike.

You need a timing light. He probably doesn't have one, he seems okay with bringing it to a mechanic so whose 3 hrs away?

For the computer mechanic in training (me) and anyone else needing to be on the same page.

Cam and crank sensors are basic hall-effect makers. Think of 2 communication lines. 360° is one long square wave. The cam comes around twice, so this now becomes 2 balanced square waves matching the 1 long wave. I now know my cam will make 2 short squares, my crank puts out 1 long square. The fundamentals are correct, but I start confusing you with all the cuts in the crank and those are the 1 long square cuts, all cut down waves to make 1 it gets confusing, so just think of volts are numbers 'that can be measured is = current.'

There is a resistance of a wire so show me the inches, feet, yards, it is still one long wire with a measured resistance. The cam sensor wire is one long, non-magnetic (copper) wire, wrapped around a magnetic pin or small dowel; to produce a current that moves up the wire. Turn the crank backwards and the current heads up the other wire = AC.

So one pulse goes up a wire that can be measured and this is now an input signal. If I knew my h-d resistance between their cam sensor wires, I measure mine against that spec, if I am within range, I head for the other variables.

I have no clue what the who or watt, but where is your forum sponsor that can check those? Go to his website, look up your year H-box, run thru the left turn signal reset procedure. Hell? I don't know if this is generic across the whole H-box updates and that sequence to clear the RAM and start the bike in ROM?

1. I pull both plugs; I have to check spark is step...
2... but here I am first is to reinstall a plug [take your pick] place it in 1st gear and see if the rear tire drags on the floor when I push it for compression; swap to the other cyl before I chase my tail no start.
3. Com is out of the way, yes? I want spark is next.
4. I have spark and compression, I will now see if there is gas
a. vented open from the tank cap.
b. no bent/kinked/swollen internal fuel line.
c. petcock flows like a mother.
d. float is not stuck closed so no fuel in bowl; pull drain screw.
e. crank sensor produces spark don't forget; no start = coil is good.
f. I can test my coil wire is touch which side is hot at the post so the H-box sends that out to the coil? Key to H, H to coil wire, yes?

Fwiw if it turns out to be the cam sensor I think I would replace it with an aftermarket. Check out crane ignitions they are owned by s&s
