I looked around for posts about this but didn't see any. My Wire-Plus (WP) switching module appears to be troubled. This is on a Pitbull (05) and as you may have read in my other post was not your run of the mill install. Previous mechanic cut all plugs off the BD harness and the Wire Plus. Fun.
Been running great for a couple weeks. Yesterday as I'm pulling down my street I smell something "funny". Nothing out of sorts on the bike so I kept going. As I pull into the drive way (luck!) the bike goes dark and the engine dies. Smoke starts billowing out from under the motor! Rip the seat off and get ready to yank fuse / cut wires / do whatever it takes and luckily the fuse is already blown and the fireworks are over. Later find it's the voltage regulator, a known issue on the 05's. Good thing they added the fuse... I replaced the VR this afternoon and got ready for what I thought would be a happy return to "running" status. Power on, press start, nada! Start looking through things and notice my high beam is also not working. Everything else seems normal. More looking turns up the ignition module is not powered. Isolated and tested that, powers up fine. The ignition out from the WP switching module (Plug#3 Socket#5) is dead. Confirmed I get an LED blink on the module at power up and the LED comes on for either click (on/off) of the kill switch. Same deal for the hi beam input. Click hi/lo and LED comes on but hi-beam out wire (Plug#2 Socket#7) stays dead.
At that point I decided the time had come to undo the mess the previous guy made and cut the whole thing out. I need to extend most of the wires and decide on a plug scheme to use. That ass-hat really screwed me by cutting it all back. Anyway, with the switching module isolated I found that the blinkers, horn and lo beam out (always on) seam to work fine. The blinker circuits still blink when the blinker input is momentarily grounded. They turn off properly as well. Horn actuates correctly. Hi beam, no power from the output but again, the LED does register activating the input. Ignition out stays dead regardless of how many times I activate the "kill" circuit.
Long winded I know. Sorry for the ramble. Final question, think the switching module really bit the dust? Any other ways to test before I can get a hold of the Wire Plus guys tomorrow?
