WHY NOT DRAIN THE SUMP?

So I change my oil using Gasman's "how to" but I also removed the plug from the bottom of the motor and drained the sump. I finally got hold of a 2006 operators manual (figured it wasn't that different from a 2005) and in the section on changing oil it says not to drain the sump. Why? The oil in the bike was absolutely filthy so I thought I was doing a good thing...maybe not.

If you drain the sump, you should spin the motor over a few times to get the oil back in before you start it.

Your taking an unnecessary risk when you pull the plug on the case (strip, cross thread etc).

The safest way is to do the normal drain from the tank (3 quarts), pull the filter, add 3 quarts to the tank and run the bike with the filter off to get the quart that was in the case.

This is the way I do it, works well.:2thumbs:

yep. You shouldn't normally need to drain the sump anyway as there shouldn't be much oil in there

Your right Lee, wasn't much in there but since I just got the bike and didn't know the history I wanted to get a good baseline going. Thanks for help.

If you are honestly that worried about the oil not in the oil bag. Get a oil scavenger... it will get out .75-1 whole quart of old dirty oil. Trust me I have used it COUNTLESS times on many big dogs.
