Why do I have such a hard time filling my K9 gas tank?

Last Saturday was the third time this summer I overfilled the gas all over the tank. WTF, How do you avoid this disaster? You can hardly see in the tank when filling. I guess I could not fill the tank and stop more often for gas which is a pain in the ass. The pressure coming from the gas nozzles is pretty high, even when the gas gets close to the top it starts to splash out of the tank and before you can shut it off, fuck all over the place.

yes, sir.

how much time does it take to go at half speed to fill a tank that takes 4 gallon to fill? i take a couple windshield towels, fold them twice lengthwise, insert the nozzle until the tip is about 1/2" inside the inner ring and wrap the towels around the nozzle, and squeeze the trigger about half way. RARELY does it splatter and if it does, the towels usually keep it from getting on the paint and with the nozzle being inside the inner ring, it shuts off with the gas right at the inner ring.

Come to think of it a Harley guy I ride with has done it at the same station. I think it's a pressure thing at the pumps. It never happens to me out of town.

I have no place to carry towels.

Try a different station and most stations have the paper towels in the box with the windshield cleaner, at least down here they do.

Ido use a lot of there paper towels and windsheild cleanerfor my gas clean up. There are only two gas stations in the County have trouble at both. The other is under cover and really dark. Next closest is 25 miles away, not always an option.

use the towels as preventative instead of clean-up. helps maintain sanity. (2) gas stations in a county would suck. this little island i live on has more gas stations than banks, and i think we have over 40 banks. and that is just for 22,000 acres.

I carry a microfiber rag with me all the time. I ride with a leather side pack around my waist with all my cigar and other items in it. The rag goes around the filler tube about 180 degrees and you can still see down inside. I rely on the pump auto-shut-off as well. Just squeeze the pump handle lever just enough to get it to start pumping then slow it down by releasing the lever a bit until you get a SLOW controllable flow. Put the nozzle down inside the tank until it just touches the lower inner neck ring (paint saver) and not all the way down to the backbone hump. It takes a little longer to fill but easy-goes-it!

My Prosport has twin tanks. I just take my time and fill them slowly. I do like the idea of the paper towel. I always over fill them if I am going to be riding. It Dosent seem to last long anyhow.

Yes. It happen to me many times. Keep you eyes on the gas price and pre-calculate how much gas you needed. For almost empty tank, it is around $9 ish. I usally stop filling gas around $8 and reset my speedo and go for around 100 miles and refill. work like a charm.

:iagree: Dont your pumps can be regulated by the pressure you apply on the trigger? I start relishing the trigger as soon as I feel it is getting quite full... then I just pull the trigger very slowly and I can fill the tank up to the top without loosing a single drop out of the tank.

That is some of the problem, not much pressure regulation on the nozzles I'm using. The attendant at gas station I use the most says they are cheap nozzles that don't regulate very well and he has complained about them to his bosses.

I buy gas out of town but by the time I get home it's half gone.
