I just wonder why there is such a wide spread spectrum of belts breaking... what's the difference? In proper alignment?

For the sake of argument, who actually makes a chain conversion kit that would work on our Big Dogs?

I broke my belt on my 06 ridgeback today :( but i ride my bike kinda hard at times. was getting ready to do a hole shot and snap. right on the main road in our town. a lil embarrassing lol. but guess that just means time for a new belt :) i was reading this thread to see if maybe a chain was a better idea, but i can see what 05chop's post tho. i wouldn't want a chain snapping! think i'll stick with belt...thanks for that post 05chop. made me rething that chain thing!!!!

Bad dog, no bisquit
My Mutt had a chain drive when I bought it, and I have put over 5000 miles on it with no issues. And I often holeshot and bang hard through the first few to keep my Harley buddies in line. New greaseless chain lubes don't sling and don't attract much dirt. Like the look and the feel. Have a solid chrome wheel on the back so it looks like I have duel chains running to the rear. Im a fan and it's one of the few things that make my bike look a little differnt than the rest of the dogs out there.

i like my chain drive.. Hawg Halters set up....my bike is left side drive... it looks cool but it is certainly a maintenace thing. as Marv told me 10,000 miles is bout it on chain life. i just replaced sprockets and chain ... 2nd time 20,000 miles on bike.

yea i dont mind the chain either. just wished they didnt have that priority sprocket cover which doesnt leave room for bakers conversion kit.

also wonder what dealers charge to change out a belt. got to be 4 hours labor on a softail with the 2 piece pivot shaft set-up that you can barely get to unless you pull the oil tank.

TO tight of adjustmemt will snap them. 05chop
I agree 100%. If your adjustment is off, you will brake belts more often. I have never seen a belt brake on a BDM. Ironhorse.. yes, H-D.. yes, Bigdog and other brands.. no. If you get a stone or something in it, yes it can take the life out of it. I would keep the belt. If you are worried, after you do some motor mods just put a new belt on it. Gates/BDL makes the belts for the bigdogs. Belts have come a long way from what they used to be. Much smaller, much tighter and much stronger. Said to last close to 100k miles if adjusted properly. Chain is nice for a drag bike, dirt bike or sport bike, but not your nice $30k bike.
Keep in mind, if you do put a chain on...you will probably need to put some chain guides on as well around your swingarm/pivot area. Otherwise, you will end up having major problems. Such as the chain cutting threw your swingarm
