A couple weeks ago I tightened my clutch hub nut. And today while I was riding it started making a whistling sound on the right side drive where you ajust the clutch. Any thoughts before I take a look.

whistling or high pitched squeal? only thing to cause a whistle would be something in a different position that would be splitting the wind at a strange angle. that doesn't seem logical. squeal would be metal rubbing metal that has run out of lubrication. does it go quiet at any time???

I couldn't hear it going down the road but when I was rolling to a stop I could hear it. When I got home in the garage i can hear it when you pull the clutch in and stops when you let it out.

Could be the clutch push rod needs some freash grease on it.

Is there a throw out bearing that the clutch rod pushes against that could be going bad?

yes there is, inside the primary. back out the clutch pushrod about 4 rounds for slack. the t/o bearing is held in place by a big split ring inside the domed tension plate. that was where i was headed but you said it was on the adjusting side. :2thumbs::2thumbs: but, yes, go ahead and pull the rod and re-lube it with some w/b grease. check for wear before putting it back in even on the tip that makes contact with the t/o bearing. the case-hardening does wear out.

I've never pulled the pushrod do I just go to where I ajust the clutch and screw it out there or do I have to go back inside the primary to get it out to lube it. And what are you all lubing it with.

tom, just break loose the lock nut like you are gonna adjust the clutch and start unscrewing with the allen wrench. you will probably have to remove the exhaust, but that is all there is to it. take a good look at the tip that engages the throw-out bearing for wear.

BUT, to check t/o bearing, you will have to open the primary. you should be able to get new o-ring gaskets for the primary from baker. i just did but that is for an '07.

T-Bird if your clutch hub nut was loose, it is possible that the throw-out bearing may have some damage to it. You can try putting a lot of grease on the push rod to see if it helps and if it doesn't I would say the throw-out bearing is shot.

Good luck

Mine did something like that last year while I was in Fayettville AR. Mine didn't make a whistling sound, but more like a squealing sound. Only done it while letting the clutch out or while the clutch lever was pulled in. I greased the clutch rod and have not had a problem since. I would try greasing the clutch rod first.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic on the push rod and all other bearings on the Dog (Neck etc).

Squealing Clutch Rod

I was on a thread similar to this one not too long ago. The clutch rod will become quite vocal when it is run dry. The throw-out bearing is more than likely still good, because it will be lubricated by the primary. Just lube the rod sparingly with a good (synthetic) water proof grease. Good luck T.Byrd, it's like woodbutcher says, it's not too hard of a job. Jump in there and get your hands on it.

I greased it with a good syn. grease and its quit squelling but sence iI greased it there is a oil leak coming from under the bike. Can't really tell where its coming from, but greasing the push rod woud not cause any thing like this would it.
