I'm dealing with knocking in my transfer case and many have suggested tightening the clutch hub nut. When doing so should I have the bike in gear or in neutral, if in gear what gear should I be in?

I'm not sure what bike you have but these instructions are for an 07 k9 which may be of some help to you. Left hand thread on the clutch hub nut is noteworthy.
