What's the latex bubble in the top of each head?

I have a 2008 K-9 and am wondering what's the purpose of the latex bubble (looks like a condom) located in the top of each cylinder head? It really looks out of place in a high dollar engine.

they are electric but if they develop a fault, so do not activate automatically, you can do it manually. Not sure how you do it - I guess you can press down on them - someone else will doubtless chime in who knows for sure

just out of interest if you look through the fins of the head from the pushrod side, you can see the comp releases - thank you to Sul for that piece of info

I push mine down every time I start the bike. Kind of a habit. Just want to ensure they aren't stuck!

if you have a low battery push both down [don,t have to hold them]
hit the starter, they will pop up when the cyl. fires!

when mine went bad, I had to hold them while I started my bike, because they wouldn't stay open.
probably just one or the other, but I couldn't feel the difference... I had someone to hold both of them.

brought it to the dealer, when they were both working:)rolleyes:typical), but dealer replaced both even though they seemed to be working again...:2thumbs:
