What range should our oil temps run in? I'm like 150-200, but go as high as 240 in traffic during the summer. This is my tank temp, BTW.

Anyone ever overheat their bike? I got mine so hot in traffic once (Got stuck in the fucking mummers parade in Philly), that it started blowing grey smoke from the pipes. Was still making power, so I parked it and went drinking on foot. By the time I got back 4 hours later it started right up with no problems. A buddy told me I must have gotten it so hot the oil broke down and started getting past the rings? Since then I put the temp guage on since I do allot of city riding.

Normal operating range is approx 200-250f. It is best to have it above 180 to help insure that acid due not form from condensation as Sul indicated. With good oil up to about 280 range is fine. Synthetics will hold up better than dino for temperture stability.

If you add and oil cooler, will help while moving, minimal to none will sitting still in traffic (other than more oil capacity which will take more time to heat up). If oil cooler is installed, be attentative to not letting it get too cool for than you have a chance of any mositure from condesation not be dispersed and more chance of acid.

A oil temp gage installed in line will be more accurate and give best info verse a tank gage.

If one does find themself having possibly overheated or pushed the limits, it is best to change out the oil ( IMHO ) as soon as practicle to insure that your have fresh oil that had not broken down.

A few weeks ago riding in bumper to bumper traffic on a hot saturday thru South Beach my idle began to drop a bit and the bike was burning hot. It was a pretty hot day to begin with and we had been riding pretty hard till we got to the beach. Got stuck in traffic looking for parking and I tell my partner I need to pull over and park for a while because I feel my bike getting pretty hot. As I start to pull over the idle dropped again and the bike shut off. I tried to crank it and nothing. I parked it right there came back a few hours later and rode with no issues. That thing was HOT thought before it shut off.

I'm gonna switch to Mobil 1 this weekend and see if I notice a difference.

You will like the Mobil 1 switch. Run cooler and quiet it down.

And for what its worth. The wife has a oil temp and it runs about 180-190 moving thru 60 degree day
