Did BDM start assembling S&S motors for their bikes?

No, I'm not sure but would speculate it was 05 when they started assembling them with the TP rockers covers. I think it was 08 or 09 that they went back to S&S complete motors.
But again, not sure!

I agree with Ray that the 2005 model year was the first full year of building there own engines and maybe some late 2004 models with the 117 cid. I believe because of the EPA guidelines then they found out later there was really nothing wrong with the S&S motors and all the troubles they created for themselves with the TP rocker assy, smaller valves, cam & the E carbs.....

moedog14...... I have an '08 K-9 also, and you are right...it is all S&S built.
