I was on the S&S website. I have a 2006 Mastiff. Is my motor considered the wedge? if not what is the wedge motor?
or V series?

The X-Wedge isn't released yet. It is supposed to show up in some 2009 bikes, hopefully.

The 117" S&S that is i your bike is not on the S&S website because it is made specifically for BDM only so they don't sell it over the counter. Just like the 111" is made by S&S just for American Ironhorse...

...or at least it used to be! :D

its still a super sidewinder though isn't it? not technically an Evo I believe (different head breathing set up), although it has a single cam - I think the x-wedge is EFI only and has 3 cams - someone correct me if I'm wrong

yes lee, it has three cams, one that drives the intake for both heads and one on each side that drives the exhaust ports for a total of three. these are all driven by a serpatine "timing belt". there is a video on this page if you want to watch some techs put one together.Looks like it will be a good motor.

The 111, 117, and 124 are super sidewinder plus

The 88, 96, 100, 107 and 113 are super stock and super sidewinder

S&S doesn't use the terms like "evo" "twin cam" "shovel head" any more due to Harley Davidson complaining about trade name infringment:job:

The 117" is built exclusively for BDM. That's why i decided to install a 124" in my 07 K9. My engine is an evo style (not twin cam), V-series, also called sidewinder. The 111" is also an option for the Saxon motorcyle. The X-Wedge is a new styled engine that is on display right now in London. S&S is having some kind of a trade show.

Not to disagree but S&S makes the 117 for others as well. Swift motorcycles has the 117 with the lowered compression like we have. Iron Horse had it up to 07. The Iron Horse engines for 08 were going to be the 111 and a 100.
For the money we spend on our 117's and the down time dropping in the non EPA 124 would cut to the chase. I believe if you purchase the 124 engine with their IST ignition it has a 2 year warranty.

Good point, problem with the 124" is it exceeds that magic insurance number by 4" making it hard to insure and very costly - at least here in FL. I was thinking the same thing for my HD with a JIMS replacement motor but my insurer would have said bye bye.

apologies if this is in the manual - I'm not being lazy I just don't have it here with me but does anyone know the valve sizes on the 05 bikes? The valve sizes on the 117" from S&S is 2" for the intake and 1.605" for the exhaust and I believe BDM used smaller valves (at least in 2005). Would changing them to the sizes I have shown here make any noticeable difference?

Another question if I may - I've had my decks done and compression is probably around 10.2:1 - I have the woods .650 cam which possibly would benefit from a bit higher compression - what would be the best way of achieving this?

Thanks gents - I guess this could be in a thread of its own but as we're talking engines...

Lee I think the intake was around 1.9 and the exhaust was in the 1.5 range. Was told that to go to the larger valves would require seat replacement. If I remember didn't Sul shave his heads and get a ratio of around 10.8/1?

SUL WHERE YA AT:confused:

I think you’re right on. Had my heads off a few months ago (05 Bulldog) and they diffidently were not 2" intake valve. Would have been major head work to get the 2" valve installed and I would likely have sacrificed some low end power to do it. Smaller ports should increase the velocity at the lower rpm thus give you a little more torque in that range. I'm not looking for max HP at the top end where I rarely run at. Did have them do a mild port job and diamond cut the heads and barrels while it was apart.

thanks boys - I'm with you Larry, not really into maximum absolute power so not worth doing the valves for me if its that big of a job
