What is this rust-ish looking color dripping on the stalk of the speedometer?

I clean it off and it comes back, can't tell if it's something from the road spitting up or something dripping down from somewhere, I look arIMG_0461.JPGound the area and don't see any rust

I do ride in the rain but I keep it covered when not riding. Yes it is the original speedo. If it's something rusted in the speedo that's fine I don't like that thing anyway and will either upgrade or get rid of it altogether

Looks like water has got into the speedo housing, and has rusted up your bolts or something inside and now seems to be leaking out while your riding. I can't remember if there is a rubber grommet or like a weeping hole. But water and electrical parts don't mix well. Need to pull the speedo and dry things out in there before the wrong thing gets wet and causes a short. Or could be your headlight bucket might want to check that also.

Is it possible it could be splashing up from the fork tubes? Or some thing from down there?

Could be, I know water can sometimes get on the top of the lower fork tube if that dust cover seal goes bad. But does it do it while riding or when he comes to a stop or if the bike is just sitting on the kickstand after hes been riding?

the speedo got water in it, possible a lot, while it missed the grommet. i replaced the grommet recently but no telling the condition at this point. if it causes a short I could replace the speedo but wouldn't want to get another stock speedo. i'll try and pay attention to whether it happens while sitting or riding

Well depending the year of the bike (and Im guessing 05- later based on speedo mount), unless you get a used speedo you cant get the stock one no more from my understanding. They have a digital replacement one, but you still use the same housing.

Your handle bars are steel. Check down where the control wires enter the bars. The chrome is probably pitted causing the discoloration. Hard area to notice let alone keep clean.
