What do you think?

I had the chopper out for a little run. All of a sodden it started back firing and seemed to be running on 1 cylinder. I mean it was really back firing, So I turned around not thinking I would make it home. It started to run OK again and I did make it home. I wanted an idea of where to start with diagnosing the problem. So I wanted to see where you guys would start. So that's why I ask what do you think ? Thanks 2005 Big Dog Chopper with a worked 117" S&S on it.

1. I would start checking the Spark Plugs and making sure they do fire ok.

2. Check ALL connections (Battery, etc) are CLEAN & TIGHT.

3. Fuel... make sure Carburetor is clean... jets not clogged.

Keep us posted.

Check your coil. Make sure the wires are tight and the coil is not leaking. Then pull both wires and test for spark on both wires. You either have an ign problem or a carb problem. Good luck.

Don't forget the little rubber caps on top of the Carb....I ALWAYS know when one gets cracked. Runs like shit.....

Battery voltage is? I need 5v to run correctly? No matter my box and very few telemetry components I still run on 5v.

I was running like shit because I have no clue when you took the bike out last? 1% of battery loss out each day, did he charge that battery? How old is the battery? So I'm going to assume all the above until you say diff, where can I go from here?

I got on the bike after so many days of not riding or charging the age in question battery? It ran like crap like it was running on 4.9966666v, not a solid 5v. And then the battery was getting some 4.999999v and it started to run better the closer I got to my driveway.

I again, took you for a ride down to here, not enough net info so I create my own scenario. Watt is wrong with the bike it starts running better is a turnaround sounds like it's charging up, right?

The crack on my carb and it starts to run better as I turn around? Red carpetoes! :spank:

Check my coil the more ooz came out the better it ran? Red carpet my plan! :spank:

This happened to me one of the plug wires came loose at the coil. Added a zip tie around each boot to hold it on there no issues since.

ignition short - like a plug wire shorting out on metal. check the wires for a cut around the coil cover. makes one back fire like a shotgun going off. I'd look for the problem there. , coil connections, plug wires, ,ignition switch short, ignition loose in the nose cone. loose condenser if you are using the old points setup.

One time I pulled my plugs on my harley, cleaned them with a wire brush. About 5 miles down the road it ran on one cylinder...
Couldnt figure out what the hell was wrong. Turned out one wire had come out of the wire brush and was shorting across the spark plug. Was fused to it. Pulled the wire off and was back to good.

Another thought, I always carry a new set of plugs because when one starts to go the same thing will happen as you have going on. I still think it's something to do with your coil or plug wires but a new set of plugs won't hurt.
