my clutch nut backed off for the 3rd time when i was riding...in doing so after the second time i could get 6th gear 50% of the time only....now the percentage has lessened after the 3rd time..i took it into the dealer ,outta warranty i might add,yet was wondering what damage you mighta ran into from your clutch nut backing off.......also whenever it would back off i could allways tell cause 4th gear would lurch back and forth while riding as if i was engaging and disengaging the clutch......has anyone had any damage occur from this problem??????

had shifting probs. on a trip, fixed adjustment at one of the stops along the way. I changed the trans fluids when I got home and had some metal shavings, but still shifting fine. Had the same issue with my harley 3 years ago, metal shavings and all... and no probs with that yet either.

I would say the worse damage would be on the inside of the outer primary when the clutch basket impacts the metal there. Other than that I think it would be fine. On a long stretch, there could be some un due stress on the primary chain.

What a pain in the ass. Sounds like your symptoms leading up to what you say is your problem with the clutch should be a classic reminder to everyone with our rides. I will save this as a reminder.

When I had mine serviced at 5000 miles I wanted to check my clutch nut and engine sprocket nut for correct tightness (paranoid maybe) because it would make me feel much better knowing they were set right. Clean, Locktite, and torque right is the key. No problems:up:

Since we have a Floridian in the thread, I will participate. My clutch was very grabby; grabbing so bad i had to hold the brake at lights or I would roll. Finding neutral, even while rolling to the stop was ineffective. I had to shut the bike off to get out of gear. I had Big Bike of Jacksonville (pay attention ReloaderBMG) fix the problem. They said the nut backed off, so they used Loctite on it.
And that's where the lawsuit begins. Court date is 25 Aug 09. I will be blogging the verdict on here, MySpace, BikerOrNot, Facebook, flyers/business cards, articles in the various mags (gotta love contacts!), shirts and on my car.

To summize it...don't let them touch your ride.

1) pull the nut
2) clean the nut and the shaft
3) torque to 150 lbft
4) remove nut
5) apply red loctite
6) re-install nut and torque to 120 lbft

as recommended by the factory.

AMEN, :D make sure you use a torque wrench, don't use an air or electric impact tool to torque this nut.

How exactly did you hold the rear wheel so it didn't move on you? I had this a few weeks back (just doing routine checking, noticed my primary chain was at about 1.5" of play, so pulled primary, sure enough, nut was slightly loose) I strapped the rear tire down with a strap and torqued it that way. Didn't work ideal....

have a friend depress the rear brake with the wheels on the ground and the trans in first gear.

CHECK the threads on the NUT/SHAFT –I WOULD CHANGE the NUT....

Just a suggestion – NOT SURE if it would work in a WET primary ....(I have an open Karata on both the dogs)....
Once I tighten the clutch and engine nuts I put a small drop of loctite 567 (the same one they use when tightening the brake bleeding nipples) where the shaft meets the bolt. This way when and if I need to open and inspect either nut, I eliminate any guess work – if it has backed off I would notice some movement/crack where the loctite had dried. Almost like a marker of sorts once all has been tightened.
Good luck....need any parts let me know.

If you have experienced this problem. Contact you BDM dealer and have them perform a service bulletin that was just released (SB-1107). It will correct the problem you are having. It only applies to all 07' and 08' units. It takes about and hour.

Keith I've looked up Bullitin SB-1107 and can not find it. What does it say. My sons K-9 is pulling in gear and clutch is ajusted O.K. I don't think it is the carrier barring.
