WEIRD TIRE WEAR

I have noticed in the last few weeks that i am getting some weird tire wear on my rear tire. It looks and feels like 'shark skin' and im getting like a whipped up edge oneside of the tread grooves, but equal wear all the way across the tire...the rubber, as i said, is 'whipped' up on the leading edge side of the tread grooves. on everyone, all the way around the tire...
Any ideas or thoughts on what this can be? seems to aligned ok, good tire pressure...etc. maybe bad rubber compound once it got to that part of the tire? I have about 5500 miles on it and only have about 3/16" rubber left on it...seems like it's wearing out quick...

Yeah I see that every day dealing with cars it can be caused by alignment issues and shocks but usually shocks is more of a chopped wear pattern from what you have described it's what I call feathering.

To be honest, 5500 miles isn't too bad for these soft tires (I assume you have the Avon Venom).

I have just turned 6000 miles on my Venom, and take a look at the strange left side wear pattern (left side is smooth, right side still has a couple 16ths of groove).

I have the exact same wear on my rear tire as Joe, my bike also pulls slightly to the right when you remove your hands from the grips.

First off have you really checked to see if your tires are in-line? it allmost looks like it's not in-line? Do you have any ware marks or strange ware on the right side of your front tire?? Allmost looks as if it's crabing to the right by the ware on the back. Can you post a couple of pics of your front tire so i can see the tire and any cupping on the right side? I have 5400 miles on my venom 280 and it looks  new.But its the tire that came on my pitbull so it my be one of the older batchs of tires. I have been keeping up with the posts about the newer venom's and i really think they changed the compounds to a really soft ply(to ware  out faster) and from what i have read the big problem (IMO) is the builders of the venom tires have changed there standards or there joining of the plys isn't up to standards. I really hope they get there stuff  together so that we have a choice of rubber out there to buy from.I guess venom will see down the road if there choices were the right ones or not.

I think its from the cupping in the road, I had this on both rear and front tires at around 8000 miles. Left side worn more than right.

My front tire still looks like new, but I'll take a closer look at it when I get home from work today and post pic if there is anything strange there.

(sorry about hi-jacking your thread WRM66)

WELL, I DID HAVE SOME CUPPING IN THE FRONT TIRE, BUT NOT UNTIL THE LAST COUPLE OF THOUSAND MILES, AND I THINK THAT WAS FROM A BALANCE PROBLEM.....I SLUNG ALL THE WEIGHTS OFF OF IT AND NEVER REBALANCED IT CUZ I HAD ABOUT 9k MILES ON IT AT THER TIME,,,,HAD ALMOST 11K ON IT WHEN I CHANGED IT...I ONLY HAVE ABOUT 500-600 MILES ON THIS NEW TIRE...ONE THING I NOTICED IS THE BELT IS RIDING CLOSE TO THE FRONT DRIVE PULLEY. USUALLY U CAN MAKE IT WALK LEFT OR RIGHT BY ADJUSTING THE REAR SET ADJUSTMENT SCREWS, BUT EITHER IT'S SCRUBBING INTO THE TRANSMISSION, OR ONLY ABOUT AN 1/8" OFF OFF IT AT THE MOST....I DID HAVE A NEW TRANSMISSION PUT IN IT ABOUT 2000 MILES AGO, AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT 1/8" OFF THE HOUSING, BUT NEVER HAD ANY WEIRD TIRE WEAR TIL NOW...I THINK I MAY SWITCH TO A METZLER THIS TIME AROUND....NOT TOO HAPPY WITH THE NEW AVONS....

Yeah mine also pulls a little to the right it could be the crown in the road. Some cars will naturaly pull to the right because the roads are made to shed water off the sides so they crown the roads a bit for that.If you run your tire slick you probaly will see that the left side is slick and the right has more tread this is typical for a wide tire bike.

The wear of the left side of the tire is from crowned roads. Most roads are crowned in the center and it is the high point in the road. Helps water run off to the outside of the road. So most roads we ride on our tires are wearing on the left side more that the right. Go to a country who drives on the oppisite side of the road and I bet the right side will wear faster than the left. Just a thought.

Dammit, now I've gotta ride on the wrong side of the road for the next 6000 miles...

"But officer, I'm just trying to even out the wear pattern in my shitty Avon tires"
