I'm getting back on a bike. Used to have a Ridgeback. Now I'm looking at 07 Mastiff vs 2012 Softail Deluxe. Ridgeback I had was great, very few very minor issues but nothing major. I want to get a bike which I can take it our for a ride every few days but ALSO on a long trip (1k+ miles) once a year. I love Big Dog for the fat tire, noise but I also like the Deluxe for the old classy look and comfort. WHAT DO YOU THINK? How is the reliability on Mastiff? Can I take it on a long trip and be comfortable? Thanks.

From what you said I can tell you already know what your body and mind want. Big Dogs are nice but not everyone wants the edgy bike all the time or anymore....I understand it. But kick yourself in the ass if you expected different comments from a big dog forum. I believe the riding position on the classic would be less stressful on your body. The toned down noise a bit more relaxing, granted you keep the exhaust stock. I can appreciate all bikes and understand the different pleasures they bring and statements they make. Now here's my personal input, have you tried victory yet? If not I would before you buy your next bike. Victory really has the best of both worlds. I would recommend test riding the 2013 cross roads classic, cross country, and cross country tour models. They are more comfortable then a Harley in my opinion, the exhaust note is deep but not overwhelming, and their motors have guts also, and are dead smooth bikes...I shit you not. I'm not a victory dealer or anything so my inputs are unbiased. I'm just telling you the truth as how I see it. I don't get caught up in all this logo war shit, I'm just saying be open minded and give these bikes a spin guarantee you'll be impressed.

Also in Naples. I have an older Big Dog and I love my bike. I have had my Harley's too. To me Harley is what everyone rides around here. They all look the same, even the riders. A lot of them here do not work on their own bikes and there are plenty of dealers and private shops to have work done. I would have to say they are more dependable, now that's from my own experience. There was a number of quirks i had to work out and thank god for this forum, they got me through them.
Big Dog, you will have a sharp bike that stands out in the crowd, has quite a bit more power, more fun to ride and a lot of pride in ownership especially if you like to work on it yourself. . If you like to have others work on it there are a few around but the pickens are pretty slim around here.
When I go by a pack of Harley riders or pull up to them at a light all the heads turn to check it out. And mine is a nice looking bike but doesn't compare to a ridgeback or mastif.
In my opinion there is no comparison when you ride a big dog, you feel the power surging right through you when you twist the throttle.
If you see a yellow big dog around town with a guy wearing a full face helmet, that's me. I have been an enduro and woods rider for a lot of years and feel vulnerable with out it.
