voltage regulator

:bang::Well the infamous BDM voltage regulator on my 2009 EFi K-9 caught fire yesterday 5-30-12. Pulled the stator plug as soon as I saw the smoke and fire. I think that may have saved the stator . Time will tell. Managed to run fast enough to put it out untill I pulled into my driveway and it started burning again. Put it out with the hose . what a piece of crap! Had bought a spare 2 weeks ago so I am back up and running ! Sorry but no way to post pictures. Managed to just burn the paint in the voltage regulator area and black soot all over the underside of the bike.:whoop::flag:

Glad to hear you caught it in time. Otherwise you may ended up with just a hunk o' burnin' love.

I can only imagine how pissed you must be. Mine went quietly, no fire thank goodness. I just replaced it with one from the local HD shop and got right back to riding. No issues since.

Mine went quietly on my 08 Mutt. Supposedly it was a new improved version. Happy it didn't fire like yours. Big Dog wouldn't send me a replacement under warranty. They wanted me to bring the bike in to the dealer and leave it. 150 miles one way. I said screw that and bought one for around $140.00 and installed it myself. Haven't had any problems with it since. I also replaced the circuit breaker with an inline fuse at the same time, just as a precaution.

I guess the mutts all had bad regulators. Mine went up in smoke in April on the first ride of the season. I got a cycle electric CE320L and so far so good.
