Does anyone know if a Harley VR will work on the Dog? I don't like the sound of their new fix and so may as well get a chrome harley one if it will work

Thanks

I know with a 2005 you are out of warranty but when my Voltage regulator went out and the repair shop didn't have a Big Dog one in stock, the repair shop said that they have a non-big dog one that would work but if I put it on Big Dog said that it would void my electrical warranty.

as you say not a problem for me - looks like I have to spend some more cash - I'll look at the mounts compared to my Harley as Sul says

what did you get for under a buck?? not a VR surely
When you change out the circuit breaker to a 40 amp fuse does that mean just change the fuse? is that only if I put a Harley VR on the bike?

Sul, what amperage does the 05 dogs run? I know the newer dogs run the 42amp which is the trump on running anything else.

Lee, why are you changing yours? Did you check to see if yours was even part of the concerned batch?

yeah I checked yesterday - the first two numbers are 04 - I thought either 04 or 05 were the bad ones - please correct me if I'm wrong

pretty sure its 40 amp
just had a look in the manual - it says the charging system is rated at 40 amps so the circuit breaker is rated at 40 amps - am I looking at the right thing? about the VR it says it regulates at 14.2 volts and should never be above 14.5 or you could overcharge the battery - all this means absolutely nothing to me - may as well be written in Russian

So far with my dealer, there is not a VR on the market that will work with BDM's Proprietary 40 amp charging system. I called BDM and even with mine being out of warranty, they said no other brands had been tested and that they knew of, there was not one on the market that will work with an 05+ bike without testing.
I have looked all over the place. It is a 40 amp from 05 and up. I did find one company that made a 42 amp but it was $250+ for just the VR!!!

I ended up getting a new BDM one. Any of the ones with either an 04 or 05 as the first two numbers is a bad one.

Be sure, if your VR has not gone bad yet, to get your bike into the dealer for their inline fuse fix deal to save your EHC from burning up when the VR finally goes out.

I thought the same.

Sul, I'm wondering when they did all the work on your bike if they changed out the stator to an HD style unit to mate up better with all the new electronics?????

Need a little help with vr install

I had a bad voltage regulator and got a new one from Nelson...but before I go trying to put on need a little help:confused:

Does anyone know where the single wire from the VR runs to / connects? Before I cut off the wire ties and wrap want to be sure I can (1) find the damn end (2) have the right wire contectors (does is splice in or does it have a connection of some sort Ill need to crimp on?) thanks for an assist
