Voltage regulator replacement?

Does anybody know where to buy voltage regulator for 2007 Mastiff? Performance Parts doesn't seem to have any in their stock.

HD dealer sold me Transpo 25353 but after investigating it closer, I found out that it is for 32A stator and BD requires 40A. It may not last long and better not even test it...

Pretty sure big Dog used a 32 amp system.

Compufire or cycle electric.... Try j&p cycles or drag specialties.

Wouldn't a supplier part database be nice? See sticky in technical forum.

Mine went up in smoke on the first ride of the season. I got a cycle electric model CE320L from amazon. Price was good but it took 10 days to get it. Amazon fronts for power sports super store which does not get the best reviews.

BD switched over to a 32amp voltage regulator. Same as a Harley.

I replaced mine with the cycle electric, 32A ordered from drag spec thru local shop and had it in 3 days. Only side effect was my speedo reset so now my bike only has 300 miles on it!

40A VR

According to the specs, 2007 Mastiff has 40A stator. 32A VR might just do the job but when the load is high it should overheat.... and it might break the stator, as well!

I can see that somebody has succeeded with Cycle Electric CE-320 but it is still 32A. It could be that some BigDogs are 32A and some 40A? If BD switched to 32A and still having 40 stator, somebody must know more....?

The service manual tells how to test VR. I compared my new 32A to these tests:

Pin1 – Pin2....... >2megohm 2,3 megohm.... ok
Pin1/2 – Ground >1megohm 0,63 megohm.. fails
B+ - Pin1......... >1megohm 0,67 megohm... fails
B+ - Pin2......... >1megohm 0,76 megohm... fails
B+ - ground...... >2megohm 26 kohm......... fails badly

Another challenge is the connector – the most VRs on the market have different connector. Naturally I can take the connector from the old VR.

BD requires a series type regulator (opposite to stunt type) and it is often hard to tell what type of VR shops are selling. My guess is that my new is wrong type as B+ to ground is far out of specs. I continue searching.... I will probably buy some 38amp VR for HD and just change the connector.

It is really pity that we don't have any replacement part database available for BD.

I hear that. Be sure to shoot me your info. when you get things worked out. Really amazed that not a single person has contributed thus far. Lots of guys ask for help. Really puzzled by the lack of responses.

My learning curve: I couldn't find any two phase 38A VR, either – they are all three phase.

I placed the order for CE320-L and I hope the tolerances of the product are ok for 40A system, too. Or let me put it this way, there is hardly any other proper or better alternative just now..... Well, I could change the stator from 40A to 32A, too, but next time....

Don't think having a 40A stator and a 35A regulator is any concern.

I was running the 40 amp stator/rotor last year and the rotor shelled on a ride. You can't get the rotor for the 40 amp set up bigdog was running. So I was told by the numerous places I called. Put the 30 amp compufire that bigdog is running. Have had no issues and never changed the regulator.
