lil help...installed doherty power pacc with desperado cover today and changed out rubber hoses to braided...(07 Chopper) (ran rear head breather down to bottom of frame) loosened coil cover for better access to lines, got everything done, bolted back up checked torque and off for a ride. Noticed pretty good vibration in right foot peg...back to garage and noticed oil leak at rear rocker box cover left side, back corner. Any ideas....oil leak from vibration? vibration from....?

thx guys....

Make sure that your front motor mount bolts are tight as well as the entire rightside forward control. Oil leak from rear rocker box cover is probably due to chrome buildup along the edge of the mating surface of the rocker cover.

Pop the rear cover off and see if the mating surface is flat. The "ears" on the left side of the rocker cover have a tendancy to have a "rope edge" of chrome build up on them and the result is poor compression of the rocker cover o-ring.

Since the engines come preassembled from S&S, they have obviously lowered their standards to improve profits. There was a time when this would have been completely unacceptable.

I had the exact same problem with a bike the other day and that is what I found.

not to second guess you at all dogvet cause you always give great advice.
heymoose, are you sure its the rocker box cover or the rocker box it self. my K9 has developed a small leak at the left rear corner of the rocker box. the gasket has a small tear right where it's leaking.

Mine did the same thing, took it in for the leak, they replaced the gasket and lightly ground off the excess chrome...

Hey Moose, good to hear from you. Glad to have met you in Daytona!!!

Did you remove your coil cover completely? If so did you replace the nylon/plasic washers between the head and coil cover? I've replaced mine a couple times mainly cause they've melted but they do a good job of vibration insulation.

As mentioned I would check all motor mount points.

Hey Ray,...yea Daytona was cool...it was great to meet you...hope you had a good journey back..

I didn't take the coil cover off, just lossened it a bit to give me a little more access to get to hoses....fiberglass washers were in tact and I made sure i replaced them...checked right forward control hrdware, all tight...gotta have something to do with those motor mounts on the coil i would think...carb work shouldn't affect it...

Where would I get those washers? I'm almost positive I don't have them...
I've replaced mine a couple times getting them from the dealer. Nelson???

HeyMoose, don't forget my thread on installing longer head bolts in place of the ones in the coil mounts. Gas Man did a "how to" on it. You head is tapped very deep yet they only use 1 inch bolts which work loose often. You can replace them with 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch bolts and get a lot more bite!

Yea Ray,

Got those 1 1/2 bolts on order....plan on changing the 1" ones out. Guess I'll do that then check it again....trying to think what else I F'd with that might have caused this.....

Second guess all you want Narrow, I don't claim to have all the answers, If I did, I'd be doing this for a living! The covers I saw that were leaking had chrome build up on the lid. Next one I see, Il check the box as well....bottom line, crappy chrome.

narow/dog....I didn't clarify, the leak appears to be at the rear head, left rear corner of the rocker box where the rocker box mates up with the cylinder head, not the rocker box cover.....

Bummer, now you'll have to replace the gasket between the box and the head!

You may want to make sure that it is not an accumulation from blow buy coming out of the air cleaner and vent. I have seen where it will puke out a little when getting hard on it and end up with a sheen on generally the right side, but also some seem to find it's way to the left rear right below the rocker box looking like it may be leaking and it is not.

I think a few others have had the same issue before and it was talked about on here of the old board.

Is there an other signs of oil sheen or leakage, especially on the right side, like spots of the exhaust or on the belt cover and/or tranny?

Fiber.....I noticed some spots on the tranny cover.....need to check the right side closer....exhaust and belt cover.....I have the rear head vent routed down low to bottom of frame..

When you ran that breather to the ground did you keep the check valve in the correct direction???

Here's an old pic of mine... white side to the motor!!

If not you would build up excess case pressure.

^good call gas, make sure you've got that going the right way. It'll puke oil out of the weakest spot otherwise, which could be that gasket. Swap it around and it could stop....

Yea Gas, Mines ditto of how you have it in your photo, left the small rubber hose section to the head and didn't mess with the check valve, just clamped on magna clamp and ss hose to the right side of the valve....maybe over tighten the clamp...? crimping the hose...? I'll take the clamp and hose off and check it again....I threw a magna clamp on the end at the ground too...

SIICK!!!
Moose....if you want...you can take off the rubber hose and just clamp your check vavle to your ss....thats how mine is done.....like Gas said ...just keep the white part to the motor....here is a pic...of mine....

Was going to do that Chop...wanted to take off rubber hose at head, move check valve to bottom and go right to head with ss...wimped out though since it's pretty tight getting to that head fitting under the rocker box....
