verify trouble shoot

I need some help in verifying my trouble shooting process on my 2008 Pit (carb). I was running around town the other day with frequent stops, no issues with the bike, ran fine started up fine. Last stop about 1 mile from house, halfway home the bike completely shut down, no light no nothing. After towing it home I check battery output with a multi meter .37 VDC. Disconnected all connections to the battery terminals and rechecked battery output 12.7 VDC. Reconnected ground to bike and positive lead from starter 12.7 VDC, connected VR 12.7 v, connected +/- leads from EHC harness .37 v, Disconnected everything again from battery, removed backbone and power harness from EHC and reconnected the leads to battery, 12.7v, connected backbone harness to EHC 12.7v, removed backbone from EHC. Connected power harness to EHC, 12.7 V, reconnected backbone and power harness .37v. Yup got a short. I have a spare set of backbone and power harness (new). I repeated the same process of connecting the backbone and power harness to the EHC with the same results. I did not connect anything to the other ends of the harnesses just let them hang. Conclusion Bad EHC. Is my process of determining this faulty??? Any recommendations on a replacement for the EHC? I was considering DOC’s Electrical System Controller, any input on this system would be great before I drop the $$$. Battery and VR replaced last summer, no electrical modifications except Dakota digital speedo

sounds to me like you just drained your battery by too many stops and not enough long runs. it takes about 20 miles to recharge the battery after it gets cranked. big motor, big draw.

The EHC shouldn't be able to drag the battery down to .37V without doing some smoking unless the battery is already very very low. And, if the bike is running and the charging system is working, the bike wouldn't be shutting down due to the battery being low. So...

Load test the battery and make sure the charging system is working properly. (Don't forget to check the circuit breaker (or fuse) that's inline from the VR to the battery.)

2X. I have learned over the years to put a new battery in my bike every year because it's cheap insurance. Batteries can start the bike and then go dead 1 mile down the road when they decide to go bad.

I have bought high priced batteries and had them go bad in a year or so and low priced batteries and had them last 2 or more years. Now I just buy a low priced battery on my birthday every year and haven't had any battery problems.

After reading your post I would suspect a dead cell in your battery.

1. I want to start the bike without backbone so I am 12.7v to start.
2. I want to keep the bike running and now touch the backbone to the bike.
3. I want to keep installing wire clips or wires so either my backbone is a poor ground???? Or, one of my rear wires is tied to the controller and out of the controller with the same wires in and same wires out is to now pull the dakota wires one at a time to see if that was the problem?

In other words, my wires are pulled from the dakota. I have an idling bike and I now install the backbone. No stall, I now install wire harnesses. No stall, I now install one dakota wire at a time until it stalls?

A. Do I start with no backbone installed I am back to 12.7v. It's not the EH.
B. Do I start without wires installed, I touch the backbone to the frame and the does EH shut the engine off?
C. Do I start I or do I look for the last thing I did electrically to the bike is remove the dakota or whatever wires I used, pull one until I see .37v shoot to 12.7v, it's one wire usually is a short.
D. Do I start? Then, I have 9 wires to find out of that backbone into the controller? Or when that backbone is installed, I want to see which side of that frame is shorting out?

My stops and go’s about 20-30 min apart except last stop (5 stops total) checked fuse (breaker) no issue. I’ll pull a load test on battery tonight if I’ve got time. Just figured I’d get some life out of the bike even if the Battery was low. Any recommendations on aftermarket EHC replacement??

If the battery was pulled down to .37 volts and it was good...something would be smoking...

Finally got around to load test on battery, beyond bad, new battery in full charge wired in EHC and low and behold we have smoke, fuckin piece of crap, that’s # 2 on the EHC. Knew this day would come at some point, guess it’s time to bite the bullet and go aftermarket. I would prefer plug and play vs. the Wire Plus, Any input would be greatly appreciated

ks, this is where your original spark plug wires said something, no? Couldn't turn the engine over? Took the primary off the coil?

That's a bummer. Any of the so called "kits" out there will still give you a "module/computer" so you will be swapping one for the other. My WP lasted 200 miles and another members lasted 50 miles. That leaves the RIP kit which you can search what is up with that on here.

I'm going old school like a few others but that's just us wanting to ride without electrical worries and not caring about the originality of the BD brand.
