various starter issues

Hello all,
I have a 2005 Ridgeback. Last night I broke my jackshaft, so NOGO on Daytona this weekend. Anyway, i was wondering if anyone elses starter slams as soon as the button is pressed? It doesnt always do it, especially after I roll forward a few feet. But this time was the last one. Im on BDM starter #11 now. Any input on your expereinces is appreciated.

Ive heard well of Spyke starters from people on this site, so Im going that route. Any reccomendations on 1.4, 1.8 or 2.0, best site to buy from, so on so on?

Have you checked to make sure you compression releases are working properly? 11 starters just ain't right! Something else must be the root cause for that many starters to fail. I don't think you have a starter problem, but something else is not working properly. They also make a cam that has recessed lobes when starting to reduce compression, but I would definitely start with the comp. releases for proper function.

Check your ring gear for wear, and replace it if anything looks funky. Double check clutch hub torque. Make sure the starter is not misaligned in any way. Try loosening the starter bolts, then just barely make them hand tight, then run the starter. If it doesn't bang, that could indicate a misalignment. Take off the primary cover and watch it engage, look for any problems.

Thanks for all the input. Comp releases were replaced a year ago and are still working perfectly. I did have a bad hole cut in the back primary case for the shaft to my pinion gear. That was the reason for the first 7 starters. But what Im really worried about is the slamming I get once in a while. Anyone else get this? What is a "drop slam starter"? As for the ring gear and clutch hub torque, Ill have to let the mechanic check all that. Im not verse with the v-twin set-up and specs yet; I grew up in the sportbike world. But thanks again for all the honest and intelligent input. Ill check it all out.
So, any recommendations on which site or company to get and aftermarket starter from?

I read about the car alternator shaft fitting our starters. I made some calls to local shops, and sent some emails to BDM Corporate, and they did have a new shaft and installed it in the starter for me for $63.50. I did the R&R on the V and she runs like a champ! Im very happy I didnt have to spend another few hundreds dollars for starter #11. The part number for the shaft is 028381-0040, and the number for the starter it comes from is 028000-7300. I had mine done at Victory Auto Electric and Air, Inc. at 4521 Sunbeam Rd in Jacksonville, FL. Phone number is 904-731-5065.

As for BDM Corporate...they can fuck off, worthless pricks.
