Vance and Hines Big Radius Exhaust causing heat damage to side cover

How are you guys? I recently discovered that after upgrading the stock exhaust system on my 2007 Big Dog K9 to a Vance and Hines Big Radius exhast system, that my bright candy red metallic sidecover with metallic silver ghost flames is starting to show some heat damage in a quarter sized area clostest to the exhaust pipe. What a disappointment! The damage is not really noticeable at the present time (it appears as white lines in the surface of the paint job). Does anybody know if this damage is repairable--perhaps the lines are only in the clearcoat, which can be stripped and re-clear coated? Do you think that Big Dog Motorcycles will help me out with the repair costs? Also, is it true that Vance and Hines, and or Big Dog Motorcycles is aware of this problem, and offering a new exhaust heat shield that will prevent this damage from ocurring? If so can you please tell me the part number and name of the part? I would greatly appreciate any info. that you great people can offer me here. Thanks so muck--Brock

I would try to add a small heat shield to protect it. I doubt you will get any help from BD or V&H on this. You are going to have to get creative and find a solution.

loosen the pipes at the flanges and mounting bracket and try massaging them away from the side cover a little more. then re-tighten them. maybe that will help.

i have the same bike with the same pipes and have never had a problem. doubtful on the "help" part, esp. BD. why would they help when an aftermarket something f??ks up the paint?

BigdogBro2 had his cover get bubbled and I told him to get his inner pipe wrapped with heat shield tape from just below the top of the heat shield down to just above the first heat shield hose clamp. No problems since and the bulldog V&H big Radius 2 pipe is even closer to the cover than the K9. On a Bulldog there is only about a half inch or less clearance. I thought there was at least an inch+ on a K9. I thought only the Bulldog version pipe heatshields were redesigned. I wrapped mine before any problems on my bike after his experience.

I hadn't heard of this prob before with BR on K9's; wonder if you have the correct bracket maybe? I have that setup on mine with no known paint issues.

Thanks!

How are you guys. Thanks so much for the great responses to my muffler problem. I have taken your advice BigDogBro1, and wrapped the heat shield around the pipe, and looks good! Great idea man--you really know your stuff. Thanks again my friends--Brock.

You might be running lean (HOT) if you have not yet rejetted for the new pipes. EFI or carb? EFI should self adjust.
