Sure enough, bike turned 1 on Nov 1 and has a little over 19k miles on it. Started making LOUD ticking so I took it in... they said the Valve Guide was F'd... S&S topend, not TP. They said it was very unusual, that it usually happened with the TP's. Any idea's??? Been without the bike since Sat, looks like I'll get it back next week :(

Stock lift on your cam? Have you kept your oil changes on a regular schedule? Also what kind of oil are you using? You let your bike warm up well before you take off, just a bunch of questions. Im a tech! Its my job.

Hey, don't worry about asking alot of questions... it's not a problem to me.

So, been using synth blend, not changing it as frequently as I should/need to. I let it warm up a minute or so. Stock cam.

I know I need to change oil more frequently, and I'm going to switch to AMSOIL, but I've ridden my entire life and never had problems.... well, except when I was 16 and a timing chain was too loose.... opps.

That's the first one,bad guide,I've heard of on an all S&S assembly. Need to find out what caused it. If you can, have them give you the bad guide(if they don't need to return it for warranty),and post a picture,or take a picture of it,or send it to me.I'll cover the freight.
John:)

You didn't over rev it or miss a hi-rpm shift did you ???

ok so how important is the warming up issue? i ride when it is above 34 degrees but I go to work at 0100 so I don't want to wake the neighbors. Does it really make a big difference if I do not warm it up and how long should it warm up for?

I've always been told that a V-Twin requires a good warm up prior to taking off. Why this is I can't really tell you but I believe it's done to prevent blowing gaskets. But I've always warmed mine up. In Kalifornia I lived in a gated community on a cul-d-sac and I would push my bike out to the street when I had to leave early in the morning just as a courtesy to my neighbors. LDO had bad neighbors in Kalifornial so he woke their asses up early just cause he could!!!! :D

I always warm mine up. I blew the head gasket on the front jug a couple of years back. I was told it was probably from not letting it warm up enough before taking off. Someone told me the motor expands more than .03 thou after it warms up.

I believe warming up is important
but in society meaning neighbors in the morning makes it tuff
I been there
but not changing oil is the mother of destruction
dirty oil kills engines and gear boxes
especially when oil moisture soaked ,and broke down convential oil from not changing and then we don't warm up bike
good formual for failure
see it it industry and also in auto also
we use to block off oil bypass so all oil got sent through filter in big block corvette
as per Jenkins racing did
never had a rod failure
I am a freak for clean oil
worked for years for me
Just my 2 cents

I always warm up untill heads start to get some heat in them
change my oil at least every 2000 miles as you can see the oil pressure drop big time when at idle
new oil 10psi at idle and drops to 2 psi when it is getting old

I always let mine warm up for 5-10 minutes. I notice if you don't, you get a lot of rattle noise on the top end. Warm it up and no problems.

I'm a daily rider... rarely does it go over 4500rpm, I've hit the limiter a 1/2 dozen times maybe.
