Used K9 registration in California?

I live in California and am looking at buying a bike from a guy in Missouri. It's a 2007 K9 with about 17,000 miles.
He claims it can be registered in California, but how can I know for sure?
Are all K9 bikes California legal?
Thanks.

I would ask Curtis since he knows and is in CA...also wouldn't hurt to ask a local DMV or see if there is anything in their rules.
When I bought mine when I lived in Oregon I had to take it in for an inspection and prove that it was not altered since it didn't comply with OR...which by the way also had to do with how loud it was, which it failed (stupid city ordinance about sound polution).
I then took in the title and bill of sale to a different DMV outside of the city when I was renewing my Harley and they didn't even question it...so long story might also be who you talk to and when.

EDIT: just looked up CA rules out of morbid curiosity and it says you have to get it smog tested/certified prior to registration (any vehicle later then 1975 to include motorcycles)...again you will have to ask someone that is in the know on that specifically but I can tell you that might be tricky with a carb and exhaust without catalytic converters (and likely without baffles).
Additionally a bike I was looking at in Temecula (also a 2007 k9) being sold in California says not for sale/registration in CA.

I bought my 08' Mastiff, in 2021, from the original owner in CA. It had an updated CA registration at the time. It had V&H big radius pipes on it with the "normal" stock baffles. The only thing that I removed was the vapor canister that was required there. I would imagine that you'll have to have one of those installed on it.

yes you can bring this K-9 to CA.
I brought already 2 of them to CA. It is important that the odometer shows at least 7,500 miles and then you are exempt from the CA EPA emission standards.
if the bike is from a private person, then I suggest to get it registered with a AAA office.....as it is the easiest. If you purchase it from a dealer, then you need to go through DMV to get it registered.
I did both and had no problem whatsoever.

good luck

When I bot my '08 K9 from MA, I had it shipped to CA. Some previous owner removed the DOT sticker, so I had to take it to the CHP for a VIN Verification before the DMV would issue a title. Mileage was greater than 7500. My advice is to be sure it has the DOT on the left down post and greater that 7500 miles.

Was just checking on that one you mentioned in Temecula that says it cannot be sold in California and noticed that the bike only has 6500 miles on it. So maybe that's the show stopper on that one. In any case, I'll ask the seller of the bike I'm looking at to get a bunch of photos of the VIN to see if there's anything there about DOT and/or Cal emissions. With close to 18,000 miles on it I'm thinking I'll be OK. A member mentioned here about registering at the AAA. I just joined so will go that route.

Thank you for the input! I just joined AAA so I can use their registration services. The bike I bought…2007 K9…is due to ship tomorrow morning. Can’t wait! The more I look at what this bike comes with, and what the seller is including, the more I think I got a pretty good deal.
This bike comes with:
- Sissybar
- S&S tuned induction air cleaner.
- Single seat with backrest
- Dual seat
- BDM sissybar bag
- Newly installed foot pegs
- Brand new Vance & Hines exhaust
- New rear tire

And the seller has been great, sending me tons of photos of the bike plus a video of it running.

Looks like you landed on a good one. Best of luck. Keep our internet address tho…haha
Thanks! I’ll definitely be back here a lot now that I’m a Big Dog owner…again.
Had a 2005 Big Dog Chopper that I bought brand new back in 2005 and had for 7 years and 87000 miles, then sold. Always regretted selling it. Feels so good to be back into the Big Dog fold!

Really nice looking bike. I like it.

A long long time ago, when I was a young man, California had a requirement for original stock exhaust only. I hope you don’t have problems and it’s easy as said above.

You could always move out of California to a more reasonable state and cheaper to live in too! My yearly inspection costs $10 or $20 for two years and they don’t inspect anything. They take down the mileage and hand me a sticker and normally I don’t even have one.

Yeah, I‘m hoping the registration goes well. For whatever reason the seller thinks I’ll have no problems, but that’s easy for him to say.
