upgrade / and diagnoises

My dog is 05 bdm chopper 117 ssw+ engine / with e shorty carb.

I have tp style rocker boxes, (4 bolt)

The rockers have been noisy from day one ( 2 years to this day)

Today buddy and I checked the pushrods they are within spec
from zero lash, 4 turns. but still noisy.

my question is : is this just something i have to live with because of the tp style rocker boxes?

I dont see how upgrading to s@s style (6 bolt) will quiet the noise down. I think
it's cause i'm not well versed in what's involved.

Can someone explain to me with pics or video how 6 bolt (upgrade) will
quiet my top end down. and WHAT DO I NEED to get this done.

I already have the roller roller ams and new heads (with pre installed vavles inside) and gaskets . What else do i need to complete this job.

Thanks so much ya'll.

Neil.

Just asking but is this your first V-Twin? All of mine have been noisy but if its real bad then maybe you have a bad lifter. You could try 3 1/2 turns. Lots of threads on it here. Same with the converting over to S&S. Still I have 95,000 miles on my TP head bike and it's ran fine.

I agree with what Ray is stating. What cam do you have? Some hi performance cams let the valves close very quickly and can cause some extra noise in the top end.

This is NOT my first vtwinn. my other bike super quiet motor, vulcan 900.

I cant find a step by step how to on upgr from tp to s&s.

can someone post a link please.

If you decide to go S&S you will need

SKU 900-4065A Roller Rocker arm set $478.95
SKU 90-4110 S&S Rocker Boxes $599.99
S&S Rocker Arm Shafts $35.00
$1,113.94
I've been wanting to do this since 2007. Just never seem to have the money and the dog has been running good. Now at 27,000 miles and she keeps on ticking along. I also want the 585 cam and need to change my lifters. One day I'll make the change.

Time and time again I hear "my bike is running good, but I have some engine/valve train noise. Majority is TP rocker box equipped S&S motors. :bang:
It's all about GEOMETRY. S&S uses an average valve protrusion of 2.050". TP, Harley Davidson, and others use an average of 2.00". This creates a problem. Seems the rocker arms want to contact the valve stem at the edge instead of the center stressing the guide. You WILL have a problem eventually... NO way around it.
Picture is a customer's head who said "bike is running well, and he had NO noise"(maybe because the "Big Radius" pipes drowned the noise out.)
It's like "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". Get rid of the TP shit, and have the heads checked out, before the shit hits the fan.

X2 on the 3.5 turns! I put the S&S on a while back still a little noise, after my top end rebuild I did 3.5 turns and now it's about like my Twin Cam HD!!!:2thumbs:
