Put a brand new, charged, 300+ CCA battery in the bike and I still have my spinning but not engaging issue. Now, I am able to get it to fully crank after I hit the start button for just a split second, after several "clicks" of the button.
I am beginning to think that the jack screw is not extending cleanly thus keeping the high amp circuit from closing. Is there a bushing or something worn out or out of alignment that would keep the jack screw from extending all the way out? The fact that it will crank after a few hits makes me think that the alignment is off possibly.

PS - ~14 Vdc across the battery when I rev it a little....yahoo

Tried something today and I am pretty sure it is a band-aid that will work for me as long as I have this bike.
I too have the spinning and no engage of the starter. Now the fix!???
I tried to start it today and got the spinny, then I put the bike in first gear and pushed the bike forward until the I met resistance (trying to push the bike in gear = dragging the rear tire) then tried to start it again normally and boom...full starter engagement! I will continue to try this and see if I am on to something or if it was a coincidence!

Bump on an old thread, I'm having this same issue, starter just spins and doesn't engage, I'm thinking its an alignment issue, I just bench tested the starter, its working fine so i put it back together and its good for now, any ideas on this???

I would start with the contacts in the starter solieniod. Clean them up good. If you think there is an alignment issure then pull the primary cover and inspect the teeth on the clutch basket and check the bushings on the starter gear and jackshaft in the primary. Don't know if I said that just right but there are some bushings/bearings on the end of the starter jackshaft in the primary that if worn could cause some mis-alignment.

That happens sometimes, you shouldn't have to keep doing it. the gear fell out of alignment. By doing what you did you brought it back in. If you have to do it consistantly than the starter is getting too worn out and time for a rebuild.

Looking forward to retirement
I was at Sturgi last yr when my BD after unloading it from the trailer fired up BUT it sounded different. I had brought also my HD Ultra Classic. The next day when I went to fire up the dog the starter went click click. Jumped into the truck and went to Wally World in Spearfish and purchased a new battery. After installing new battery. CLICK CLICK. So, I loaded up the BD and brought it to South Dakota V Twin. Owner said they were 2-3 days behind but he would try to get me going.I hated calling but, This was Sturgis so I called twice a day. Only to get. "We are waiting on parts." 4 days later I got the phone call. Starter was out and he told me a new Spyke starter installed was $710.00. That included new gaskets , seals, & Starter. He would have it ready for my last day at Sturgis to ride it. When I picked it up if fired up and I asked him why so long to get it back to me. He said and I quote," you said you had a Ultra HD to ride around on so we figured you were covered, while others here at the rally got bumped infront of you because they only had 1 bike." OK, I was pissed!!!! Anyway I trailered back to the rent house and unload the dog grab my wife and we take off. We road for 4-6 hrs then went back to the rent house to pack up and get a early start home the next day. Later that evening I went to load the bikes Ultra 1st then the Chopper. WRRRRRRRRRRRR. M%^$#@ FU%$ starter was free wheeling and it was 8pm. I called South Dakota V twin and got the answering machine. When I got back to Shreveport I dropped the bike off at my mechanics shop. That afternoon he told me to drop by. Here was the problem. Shopps like SD V Twin and others who rent space bring in mechanics from everywhere to work on the HD's that brake down (A LOT BREAK DOWN!!!). Alot of these are kids you normally would'nt let change the front tire on your bike. What had happened and when my mechanic got the owner of SD V Twin on the phone he admitted to this. He hired a guy with only HD experiance and thought he could change out the starter. The Jack shaft on the BD 03/04 is differant. He used a washer to sheim it on the Primery side. When the Bendex slung the jack shaft out and the engine engaged the jackshaft of the starter nexer went fully back in because of the washer. SD V Twin agreed and paid my mechanic fo fix my bike correctly. However, I was still pissed they bumped me 2 extra days of riding my dog, and then did a shabby job fixing it!

Is the starter shaft supported on the outer end by the primary cover and a bushing in the cover?

Dusty,I've got an 02 wolf, and unless I missed something it looks to me like your missing the jackshaft bolt and lock washer(from the pic anyway),If yours just has a "bushing" to keep it in line,it may be spinning due to the lack of the bolt and washer.Ask othres who may know for sure,I'm just going by my 02
