I didn't think they had a right side drive setup. i know moespeeds has one on his left side drive but sounds like you'll need to do some homework.

I don't think Ultima has a good rep. Isn't most of their stuff china made?

Baker units have been known for being loud.

In mine and Thumper's opinion will be the same... I know Thumper... I'm sorry.

RMD all the way. Nelson can get you a great deal on it. Plus its the only one that is all chome!

Can't confirm on the China source, but have asked a direct question of them on it. Know their engines have a decent rep, just low production numbers so I don't think the word is really out. Their frames are made in the USA but like a lot of the companies, not sure yet about a lot of the support components.

and .... did get the cringing confirmation of the "overseas" manufacturing.

Never did get a response on whether or not they have a version tested for BDM RSD though.

I go with the Karata or RMD recommendation.

Another round please
My BDL works great. Alitlte crackling when clutch pulled in, but no big deal at all. I would by it again. I was told you didnt want a chrome one as they may flex and possibly peel. May be true or not, just what I was told.

I'm very happy with mine, it's super quiet you really don't hear much chatter and install/alignment with the solid motor plate and outer bearing support is pretty simple. The company I got it from is called Southern Motorcycle Works. Southern Motorcycle Works aftermarket Harley and V-Twin Motorcycle parts discount parts , custom wheels, exhausts, frames, motors, chrome, touring and dresser accessories and more...
They had a great rep on Club Chopper so I called them. They take an Ultima clutch basket and build the rest of the drive themselves in house. They had to machine mine to fit the abnormal offset, so if you call them I'm sure they can do something. Ask for Randy and tell them Moe sent you. I'm pretty sure Ultima is manufactured overseas, but I can say the quality of the whole kit was top notch. Only issue I had was bad threads on my front pulley nut. They had me a new one the next morning. I have heard of issues with the jackshaft sticking, but right off the bat I bought an aftermarket jackshaft and reamed the bushing inside the cover and it's been good. Total cost including the aftermarket jackshaft was about $1600.

A local shop here used to use BDL and had too many problems with the newer ones. Seems QC isn't what it once was and outsourcing parts has lowered the over-all quality of the units. They now use Ultima with no problems as of yet, two years and counting.

Which is why you shoud go with the Karata, Sorry fellas, they been around for 30 Years Plus and have the only Single Piece Backing Plate, Low Noise and easy Instal, Plus, you get 15% off if you Mention this site.
I agree Karata is a GREAT GREAT product. But they aren't the only single piece backing plates.

Would I rate karata higher than the RMD. Sure, but you also pay more. I am not debating that you get what you pay for that is why I suggest away from the ultima's CONFIRMED overseas production. But the RMD is a nice unit and has low noise to the rider. Buddy's complaign its noisey but they ride honda's so do they really know?!?!?!

Seems like alot of fixation on a solid or 1 pc. backing plates. While that is OK mostly for you right side drive guys because there is basically no offset to contend with dont let that be your only reason for buying one, because some cheap ass company will make one and sell you on that fact alone. Now lets get some facts out of the way. Most belt drive failures are the rear mainshaft bearing and usually they spin inside the motor plate causing you to replace the whole plate and bearing. Primo addressed this on there drag bikes by utilizing a 2 pc. plate. Another issue is that alot of these customs aren't line up perfectly and putting any bind on the driveline can also cause bearing failure. But like I said its much cheaper initially with no offset to deal with to make a solid backing plate. But don't discount a 2 pc. motor plate either especially with a larger offset. And in case you guys think I'm full of shit, I'll invite you to the buckeye nationals all harley drags on June 15th and together we can count how many drag bikes use a 2 pc. motor plate over a 1 pc. motor plate.

Well the thing I like about the 2 piece is that it makes the unit adjustable. That has to have its benifit in the long run right?

The one piece install was tit. Only 2 piece I ever did was on a Bourget and the jack drive made it a bitch. I know mine is Chinese bullshit but hey I bought it from some rednecks down in NC so it balances out!
