Twin coil performance

Energy One

Hi friends! I have installed a twin coil set up on my K-9 and was not expecting any real change but I noticed it starts instantly now but the performance at 50 and up is not right hesitates and stumbles when I hit the throttle. Any ideas?

I used Andover Voodoo coils stock ignition. Rode pretty hard today seemed to run alittle better. I'm going to see how the plugs look seems like its a bit lean.

Are the spark plug cables new or used? Plugs can misfire so just change them to clear the variable. OR?? Change the plug wires with fresh, no plug change. If the breakup goes away = Wires. If not = Change spark plugs = ?? Did it clear? OR?? If you don't care about who is doing what and maybe this may not clean up the 5k spark miss if done both at once meaning. But those two are out of the way, back to wire laying integrity as mentioned.

Pick how your [wire] setup is laid out as?

1. I have my wire in to plus to plus, negative to negative and then out.
2. I have my wires from the key going to the plus to negative to plus to negative and out.

That would be one way to do it.

The power to the coil doesn't come from the key switch so this step is not applicable to the bike...

I would do like Sven said and shitcan the spark plugs and wires, put all new fresh stuff in to MATCH the coils,a good set of NGK's are only like $2 a pop.........

Also what kinda coils did you get:(,what I mean by this is...VooDoo coils have quite a few different OHM and voltage ratings..what OHM rating are they, and what is the voltage rating, 30K,35K,40K or 45 K coils????

You may have to adjust plug heat range also to get the most performance outta your new setup.....:2thumbs:

To check if your plug wires have gone South....let bike idle...get a squirt bottle with water in it,spray the wires with a fine mist of water,IF the WIRES are crap, they will instantly leak voltage out,and take the shortest path to ground, and YOU WILL see them arcing out...

DR, I understand the key would not walk to the coils so that is a given. Not only are my posts difficult to read on the surface, but there is reading to be had in the middle too. For example:

- means 'to.'
B for battery
c for coil
G for ground completes the circuit.

(B)-(c+)-(c-)-(c+)-(c-)-(G)
OR
(B)-(c+)-(c+)-(c-)-(c-)-(G)

When the OP says 'I wired dual coils I have a misfire from mid to high' says:

1. I don't have a spark plug or plug wire breaking up at the bottom.
2. It starts a lot better was all I got out of the swap.
3. I wasn't on line all this time chasing a high end miss.
4. All I did was change coils so now I'm with thread.

So am I wired this way or this way? I am more or less trying to narrow down the wiring [was the last thing you did] before the wallet comes out for some NGK's. BTW, follow Dan to the letter if say the crossed [coil] wires did not change a thing [was the last thing you did to the bike, right]?

5. See were I'm at? I am looking at 4 points of contact made 2 ways out is one wire in (+) can combo out to (-) meaning ground it both ways.
6. Unless I am wrong, the concept still walks in the absolute wire combo and the coil does not care which way it flows. So, the bike fires off, no crossed wires, or it would backfire until you swapped coil wires or swapped the 2 wires in the back, the same equal swap. And that is not the case here.
7 come 11 is the crap shoot is... Are we on the same page yet?

Nice TIp on The PluG Wire Testing Diesel
I'm Going To FIll A Spray Bottle, WRite "Plug WIre tester" On It, And Put It In My Tool Box So I Don't Forget it.

I hear ya Sven! Although, for the sake of someone that may not know the "ins and outs" of ignition wiring I think a little more detail is good. For example: Power (red) and grounds (blue & yellow) to the coils both come from the ignition module. And wiring the coils as per your second example is more correct for a dual coil/single fire ignition (coils wired in parallel not series).

I think we're headed that way!
