So about 6 months ago I put the Trotta D3 pipes on my mastiff. This was a new '09 Mastiff from the showroom floor and it looks and runs great. Slowly over this past 6 months the chrome on the lower half of the rear pipe began turning blue.
I decided to call Trotta's shop in FLA to see about any warranty options, and this is where I got concerned. After speaking with the parts guy (Artie), who seemed like a decent guy, he told me that this is not the heat shield turning blue but the lower part of the pipe and it shouldn't be turning that far out from the engine. He said of course that I gotta get the pipe rechromed somewhere if its important to me, but then he started asking if there was something wrong with my bike since only the lower half of the rear pipe was affected. He said I may have a coil problem or worse.
Now I'm wondering if this makes sense, can you have a problem with the plugs firing, or coils, or rear cylinder and not have any ride issues? Keeping in mind that it has to be significant enough to blue the chrome, or does this sound like a chroming process issue? It does pop on decel but its minor and generally not a big deal with short pipes (or so I thought).
Also does anyone have a "ball park" guess as to how much stripping old chrome and rechroming the single rear pipe should cost? Anybody with these pipes have a similar experience? I would appreciate any thoughts or advice.
In general, I love these pipes. The D3s are loud and look mean, the style fits perfect with my bike and I have no interest in changing them, but wish the damn things were still chrome since they are only 6 months old.
