Transmission Oil Change

Changed the Tranny oil today in a 2002 Big Dog. It is supposed to take 20 OZ. I am using Mobil 1 Synthetic for the change. Seems like to me it took way more than 20 oz. Isthat possible? To check the level, aftr you remove the dipstick, you just put it back in the hole, not screwed in, to check the level, right?? Doesnt help that the Mobil 1 gear oil is almost clear.\!!!

That's another reason for you to use the Redline Shock. It's red. 20 oz is all you need, don't over fill it.

Yeah don't use mobil 1 in the tranny unless its MC tranny oil. Most use Redline Shockproof, or Amsoil.

To check it... the threads just sit on top of the opening.

Can't remember if its suppose to be hot or cold...

Check your owners manual.

I am aware of the MC oil requirements, but why not Mobile 1 Synthetic for tranny. Is there a special requiremnt for a MC tranny. Also, 90W or 140W??

Any real difference between the new Redline Vtwin Tranny oil and the original Heavy Shockproof. I found a local distributor but he only has the Heavy Shockproof.

I saw that link. Feel better! Your post is realy insightful though (read sarcasm)!

No real conclusion on that link to if there is really a difference between the two or just a new package/marketing so Harley guy wouldnt have to think when they looked for tanny oil, "Heavy Shockproof, is that for MC???"

Sorry for the sarcasm, wasn't meant that way. :D

But what more do you want? If Bert who makes thousands of transmission each year recommneds it then isn't that good enough? If you want statistics check out the Amsoil site, they have a lot of them although I'm not sure if they have any specifically to MC trannies.
I've had no issues with the Redline Shockproof and I've put on a few miles with it.

They are all good oils so get what you want and go ride!

course it wasn't Ray :D

I think too much can be made of the different oils but I am guilty of that too. I've just put the Amsoil Severe Gear oil in my tranny and I think I prefer to the Redline, as I think I prefer the Amsoil engine oil to the Mobile 1.

As long as you get a decent oil I doubt there is much between them. Just my uneducated opinion

I received an e-mail back from Fathead at Baker transmission and he said to use the same oil in the engine and the primary. Recomended Spectre for the transmission because they just changed over from Redline and you can use synthetic. I'm using Amsoil synethic in the engine and primary and Redline V-twin in the transmission. I've got 1100 miles now and everything is okay.

with the amount of miles Ray does I would guess he changes it every other week. I tend to change mine when I change the engine oil, and the primary too. That is excessive but if you look after your dog your dog will look after you.

Hey Ray, how often (in miles) do you change the tranny oil since it is synthetic.
I've only changed the tranny oil three times on my 05 with 56,000 on it. The tranny isn't exposed to things like the motor. I use the Baker recommended Redline 75-250. I know they changed sponsors this year and now recommend Spectra. All good oils.

Yeah I do the motor oil even with the mobil 1, every 3k.

The tranny oil gets done once a year.
