Transmission Leak after clutch cable replaced

Just replaced the clutch cable on a 2006 Ridgeback. After putting it all back together, it's got oil leaking from inside the cover. Does anyone have any ideas on where it's coming from, or how to fix it?
I've had this apart 3 times now, and still have leak.

Hey first,

I'm guessing it did not leak before you changed the clutch cable? Look at color of the fluid and compare it to tranny fluid. Only one place it could be coming from unless of course you really lubed up the new cable and it's dripping out.
Very possible main shaft seal.

If this is a leak out of the cable's hole? There is an o-ring missing at that area. See if the old cable has that o-ring at the hex part, or say, look in between the hex and the threads of the cable. Is there an o-ring there?

Other leak is the cover gasket. If you use some oil resistant silicone around the old gasket, maybe it will hold. If not, install a new (dry) gasket on both [dry] metal surfaces.

If you have oil and not grease leaking then it has to be tranny oil and like erldawg said likely a mainshaft seal or there are a couple allen head plugs under the pulley cover that might be leaking. I had this problem once.

Oil seems to be coming from the clutch rod hole. Pulled cover again, and there's transmission oil on the inside of the drive gear.

I am going to assume you set the bike on the side stand, assume like another poster, 'there was no leak before.'
At the angle of the trans oil to the side stand, do you see what happens you remove too many parts just to change a cable? Is this the scenario? Any photos possible where the cable comes out of, then where this leak is into some gear drive hole???


A shot of the area in question will answer a lot.

First is it transmission oil or is it primary oil? Color of oil coming out somewhat clear or dark colored? How much oil are you running in your primary? No more than 32 oz and some are running less. Are you letting the bike run while sitting on kickstand alot? There is a seal there in the actuator between the actuator housing and the tube/hollow shaft that the pushrod goes through. Post some pics if you can.

Sorry! Seems that my next door neighbor thought that it was losing fluid, so he put too much in. Dipstick showed that the fluid level was about 1/2 inch above the full mark. I drained some of the oil out, and he's checking for leaks now. I'm hoping that fixes the problem, as I'm bumfuzzled about where else it could come from.

P.S. It's transmission oil, and not from the primary.
