Trans Problem (Another)

2006 K-9, Baker RSD Out riding today & when I went to downshift from 5th to 4th all was fine. From 4th to 3rd was another story. Felt like there was nothing there, the shifter went forward but no gear change. A couple of tries & I finally felt like I had forced it into 3rd. 3rd to 2nd fine, 2nd to 1st was fine. Then noticed going from 3rd up to 4th it gave me a hard time too. When I finally got home the bike made some crappy sounds (like something is definitely wrong in Baker Land) when I leaned it but quieted down when it was upright. Any ideas before I explore or call dealer. From the readings around here, I figure it's a 50/50 deal (me or the dealer), let me know what you have experienced or what I'm in for? Thanks Carl

Had a very similar problem, turned out to be the shift rod was loose, and not adjusted correctly or tightened down by the dealer. Kind of a "floating rotation"... It must have been "close", because most of the time, it would shift normally, but sporadically would apparently rotate just enough to feel like "nothing there".

You probably have a different problem, but it's easy enough to check.

I would check what SlowVince said first. But that is the same symtoms my 06 K9 had. Started out the same as your problem and got worse quick. Mine finally stuck in third. The countershaft had moved in the transmission. My K9 was out of warranty but BDM fixed it.

Hey Mickeetwo, thanks Bro. This sounds like you may have hit the nail on the head. Can't go with the shifter rod because of the sounds coming out of the trans when leaned over & it's only in or around 4th gear. How long out of warranty was your ride when BDM covered it? Mine is 10 months past & was curious. Thanks again & if anyone else has something to add, don't be quiet now!

Hey, thanks for the replies that are pointing me in the right direction. Contacted my dealer who got me in touch with BDM. Waiting for their reply now. Hope they'll take care of it as they have for others around here. Once again, glad I found this site & the people who make it.

It's a helical cut gear, under load, it would thrust to the right side against first gear. I would imagine you would have problems shifting into 4th gear or would be stuck in 4th gear. The sliding gear should prevent the gear from moving too far out of place. If a person ignored the warning signs and continued to ride, anything would be possible. I have seen snap rings get sprung by spreading them too far during installation but that is pretty obvious when that happens (did it on my own tranny once!)

Sure, It's possible, but I haven't read many threads about shift fork issues. There are lots of possiblities. If a person doesn't have the skills or tools to conduct a root cause failure analysis, then it's all just guesswork isn't it?

Take off the top cover and the shift drum and look down in there. It's 8 bolts and 30 min of work. Drain the tranny fluid and see if you got any metal in it.

Do you recall the circumstances? I have seen a burnt shift fork before, but as I recall, the countershaft has moved throwing a side load of the fork.

The forks themselves are easy enough to get out once the drum is out of the way, and if you look at them, you will see if they are burnt. Any wear or blue/black color and you should change them. If you poke around on Baker's website you should find some diagrams. Also drain the fluid, look for metal...

Was any explanation given regarding the cause of this? If the countershaft had moved, then wear would be on the 1/2 fork.

I have a 07 K9, I have a similiar problem.......however, mine is when I am down shifting periodically I never get past 2nd gear. The linkage become free back andforth with no engagement. This has also happened a few times from 4th to 3rd. Previous to this I had the gland nut come loose off the torque shaft allowing my carriage to move freely loosing clutch action as so many others have on the site. Any ideas out there? As Anne Dixon has warranty my bike so many times with replacement parts that I have about 5 bikes in one!

Recently got the Dog back. Dealer said the nut on the clutch side losened up putting play into the clutch basket? That's why things wouldn't work right in the trans, the shaft ended up with play. Also the clutch handle went out when I was getting it onto the trailer to take to the dealer. When the clutch basket moved it put extra room so the clutch rod had pushed the basket over & there was no push back from the clutch springs due to the basket shifting. They picked up the tab, warranty was up for about 10 months so that was a stand up thing. Thanks Big Dog / Chrome & Custom, Fairfield, NJ.
