Trans needle bearing

First off, I'm Don from Mississippi. I've got an '02 BD Husky, S&S 107, and Baker 5 speed (DD5, I think). No Compression Releases installed from factory, thinking real hard about adding the S&S electric CR's later. Bike has been in storage for about three years (clutch was slipping and never got around to changing it), uncovered it last week and went to work...... changed the oil and filter, dropped in a new battery and plugs (0.40 gap). Disassembled carb and soaked all hard parts in chem-dip carb cleaner, drained and cleaned tanks and petcock with Gumout, B-12, and SeaFoam. Reassembled all, new fuel line and added an inline fuel filter (just in case tanks still have debris/gunk/varnish). All I could get out of the starter was a short grunt (maybe a quarter to half rotation of starter ring gear). I did get one good rotation after topping the battery back off and hooking up a 660 jump box that I've used to jump my 6.0L turbo diesel and a MF 265 diesel tractor, plenty of CCA from the jump box. Checked and cleaned all batt/starter/solenoid connections. Even ran a tap through the frame ground mount under the seat to clean the treads. Still no joy. Decided to go ahead and change Trans fluid while I scratched my head. I found what appears to be a flint sized needle bearing in the Trans drain plug magnet, or at least what's left of it, a small piece and large piece that's had one end pinched down (as if it had been run through meshed gears,).

Ok, so do I pull the Trans down for a full look see and/or rebuild or just pull the end plate, clean it out and change the bearing on that end of the Trans? And would a bad bearing in the Trans cause enough drag to keep the starter from turning the engine over (with it in neutral)?

Turned over great with the plugs out. That was before I found the wayward bearing in the Trans, afraid to try to spin it over now till I get the Trans taken care of. And yes I got a new Barnett clutch waiting to go in, wanted to bust the eng off before I changed it but if I've got to pull the Trans then I'll just go ahead and install the new clutch when I reinstall the Trans. :bang::bang:

Hi Don. I can't give you advice wether your tranny is good or not.. but since you intend to change that bearing and the clutch (including basket, I presume) why not inspect the whole tranny, while you're halfway there?
Maybe there's other things loose in there but serviceable and you get away with a rebuild, or maybe it's all tight and then you'll know for sure.
Better to be safe then sorry, right?

Best of luck!

Starting issue is probably starter motor itself, not related to the transmission bearings being bad. I'm assuming you put a brand new battery in it? Otherwise, it could be battery related as well.
As far as transmission goes, if you end up pulling it out, I rebuild the 5 speeds as well as all others...just send me a PM and I'll give you more info

Update: new battery was installed. I'm not changeling the clutch basket, just the wear items (fiber & metal plates). And if the Trans can be inspected and repaired in the frame I'll go that route.

might want to think about going ahead and changing out the basket while you are at it. BDM had a problem with the basket design back then and if you haven't already changed it to the updated beefier version, it is a problem waiting to happen.

also, was the new battery put on a charger, not a tender, before it was installed. straight off the shelf don't cut it.

Wasn't planning on changing the basket but it is the original Rivera Primo clutch and basket. Didn't know the baskets had a design problem, thanks. Battery was charged @ 15A until it started floating then @ 2A to top it off. It just makes me sick that I'm going to have to drain the fresh Amsoil from the tank and Trans. Glad I hadn't put any in the primary, that stuff must be be made from unicorn fat (it ain't cheep).

Just got off the phone with Andrew, looks like I'll be shipping a Trans when I get time to pull it out. And I'll go through the starter while the Trans is out. :cursin:

To-Do-List is getting longer......

Inner carrier was only problem with '05-mid '06 model years using the new Baker primary and DSSC 6 spd transmissions. Back in '02 they were using the Rivera Primo and had no issues with them as far as I know. They were actually a very good clutch setup.
