Tranny seized!!!

My bike is getting close to having 58,000 miles!

And yeah, I had the same thought this morning concerning the safety aspect of having it fixed "right" by having the countershaft replaced. That $700 is a small fee to pay in order to have a 100% working tranny, especially after already being extremely lucky that the rear wheel never locked up. Throw in the amount of miles I ride, and it becomes a "no brainer".

I guess this info will be to late for you to use, but my trans. just stopped working Sunday had to have it towed home. looks like main shaft broke, I called baker and they said about 2 hours to take apart and put back together, at $50.00 a hour and that main shaft was a little over $200.00. I took removed trans, it took me about 2 hours, and shipped to them, they said about a 1 week turn around. even thought I do not think main shaft should broke in 25000 miles, I think their pricing isn't to bad.

Tranny fixed, but DAMN!!!

Replaced 4th gear, plus another one on the main shaft that got partially broken. Replaced enitre countershaft assembly as it CANNOT be taken apart, and it had a tooth broken on one gear. Replaced one shift fork that also got broken. Tranny case was cracked and fixed by machinist, and new bearings were installed. All fixed now and running great, but to the tune of $1900.

My mechanic said the design of the tranny is questionable as there is only one 3/8" bolt holding the countershaft on, and once that backs off, you're screwed. Not sure how other trannys are, but he said this design is suspect. He also said that even though it's a Baker tranny, the ones that go into the Big Dogs are designed differently.

By the way, is the drive belt on Big Dogs different from other drive belts? A new one was installed as the stock one snapped, but I noticed that at certain parts of the belt, the edge that faces the tire is a bit shredded. A mechanic a while ago told me that the Big Dog drive belts are different than the standard Harley ones as they track differently, perhaps due to the right side drive?

Can anyone clear this one up for me?
