TP vs S&S Rocker Boxes

I have a 2006 K9 with TP rocker boxes on it from the factory. Can someone tell me what the difference is, which box is better, and if i should install S&S boxes. An if i change them to S&S is it a bolt situation or do i need to do more than just a swap. Last question cast or billet boxes?

some bikes with the TP boxes suffered problems with the valve guides etc due to misalignment - I don't know if S&S boxes are better per se but they seem to fit S&S engines better with the internal geometry - sounds pretty logical to me

I have the TP's on my 06 K9. 10,000 miles and no problems yet. It ticks but it doesn't bother me. I'm gonna drive it till it quits running. :D

TP boxes wore my guides and I switched to the S&S. I think they are better looking anyway. If you go that route you need S&S rockers and shafts too.

I didn't change my rockers and shafts when I did mine. I did already have rollers and didn't buy my bike new so maybe it was done before

I would be curious how many of these t/p are still in and running! I still have the t/p setup.

was it because of the tic tic that caused you to investigate and then found out that your valve guides were worn? My bike tics and I had a guy to check it thats was a big dog dealer and mechanic here in shreveport louisiana and he said that the bike was ok. I bought my bike used with 7500 miles on it a 06 ridgeback. I can't even hear any tic now that I've removed the baffles from the big radius pipes.

I am in the process of gathering parts to make the change to S&S all the way. I think the most important thing is the rocker arms and shafts and I don't think the S&S will work with the TP boxes. I have an 05 chopper and it has the EPA motor with the smaller valves so I am going to change the valves to stock S&S and change the valve guides also and remove the intake restrictor cones. I personally have had issues with the chrome on the TP boxes and I like the S&S look better. Mine sounds like a loud sewing machine and has since I bought it new. I am going to post some pictures of the valve guides when I tear it down.

Although I did change mine I never had any problems with the TP boxes that I'm aware of. I just wanted to get a true S&S motor I guess. Subject to the Woods cam of course!

I hear you... but... accordingly to the experts; "It's hard to say with the motors that had been set up with the TP boxes/arms. I have seen some in past fail at 5,000 miles and have seen some that last over 30,000. But I think it's not a matter of, If they will fail, it's a matter of When!"


I do have Peace of Mind now though after the change over to S&S.

I now have almost 30,000 miles on my TP's....I'll make the change to S&S one day, never seem to have the money. But its on my list

I just finished 2 more TP vs. S&S Dogs last week. 1 for Trotta, and 1 for V-Twin City.
Trotta's customer started to hear a tick. Exhaust guides were real bad, 1 seat hammered to death.
V-Twin City customer drove the bike until it broke the exhaust valve in 2 pieces. Major damage. Piston, cylinder, and 1 head casting.:eek:
These were under 15,000 mile bikes. :bang:

Considering Im at 49,500 miles, should I pull the tops and have a look-see inside? I havent heard any noises at all over the 9 years.

The ONLY way you can tell for sure, is to pull the heads, release the valve springs on the exhaust valves (exhaust WILL be the first to go), and check the play(valve to guide).

FWIW, I've had customers tell me their bike is running well, and then we find big guide problems. I guess they just don't know.
