I.d rather have so called mechanic with tricks and experience up his sleeve to work on my bike than some world class technician that will most likely charge a lot more for the same job!
I don't see anything wrong with the rope if you do it right and I have known about the compressed air before. The idea is about saving time and money.

My question is what is it that is world class about G.M. technicians?
Do people know what "world" means any more? :job:?:job:?:job:?:job:?

I have used the rope trick before, but it wasn't to check the valve-to-guide clearance, it was to either change the valve spring keepers or the valve springs (when doing a cam upgrade in a Chevy V8) so I didn't have to pull the heads. I remember doing it on a Honda motorcycle engine also, but I don't remember why, just that it had an overhead cam that I didn't want to have to re-time. Air compressors were not as common (or cheap) back then and the air fitting to fit a a park plug hole was expensive.

To check the valve -to -guide clearance, I have always pulled and disassembled the head, then insert the valve partially back in the guide (from the piston side) and then measure the clearances. Back in my hot-rodding days those were never measured anyway (on cars) if the heads were off and apart part of the standard rebuilding process at any shop was to knurl and ream the valve guides. This "re-conditioning of the valve guides" of course didn't last anywhere near as long as new valve guides, but it was cheap. 16 new valve guides and the labor to install them was really expensive in those days.

But now that I have a few more years of other people's wisdom to choose from, I choose to try to do it right, and by doing it right, only having to do it one time. So If my scooter heads come off for any reason, they will be rebuilt or reconditioned. This process will include new guides, weather they need them or not.
