Thx for this post Pat. I was wondering what years that BigDog had done this. Still seems very odd to try & pair up 2 different manufacturers. Do you happen to know why they did this? Enquirers like to know.
I spoke to a rep. (can't remember his name) at TP Eng. several months ago when I was inquiring about the TP rocker boxes on my S&S motor (2006). I was told that when BDM stopped using TP motors and switched over to S&S, they were buying the S&S motors without the rocker boxes and continued buying and using the TP rocker boxes. It was because they liked the looks and aesthetics of the TP boxes over the standard S&S boxes. Shortly after, S&S refused to continue supplying their motors without the S&S rocker boxes, and then BDM discontinued using the TP rocker boxes. Kickstart is correct on the approximate timing of the changes.

I have a concern for the tapping after the engine reaches operating temperature. I can hear it tapping at highway speeds and the bike has plenty of power but I'm still concerned the valves may be getting damaged. Does anybody know if an adjustment would reduce the tapping. >>> as for adjusting the lash in valves

Yes, try readjusting the pushrods. S&S recommends 4 turns, but I've heard many guys say they get ticking at 4 turns due to the lifter bottoming out. Most use 3 or 3 1/2 turns. I like 3 plus a flat to get the lifter plunger in the center of the travel. If you are still getting ticking after that, you may have the dreaded valve guide wear that happens on some of the engines with TP rocker boxes.
