TP Cam Cover ?

This may be a stupid question but:

What does a TP cam cover look like on an 05 / any pictures ?

The reason I ask is, bdmridgeback indicated that the 05's with the TP cam cover should have the reed valve breather.

I have an 05 that I will be tearing into this winter and if it doesn't already have the reed valve breather, I want to be looking for a deal for one on e-bay.

No, I'm not talking about rocker boxes.

Sometime in mid 05, Big dog went to a reed valve breather in the cam chest (was gear driven prior to that). Bdmridgeback (Jake) mentioned in an old post that someone at BD said that if the bike had a TP "Cam" cover, it should have the reed valve in the cam chest / case.

Not sure why you're calling it a TP cam cover. The cam cover on the '05 is on the bottom right hand side of the bike, just in front of the tranny. It has a small circular cover plate held on by 2 screws. Remove those screws and you'll see a place for a larger bolt to screw into. I use a slide hammer with that size bolt fitted on the end. You'll need the slide hammer to remove the cam cover plate. Before doing all that, you'll need to collapse your pushrods all the way to relieve pressure off the lifters that are against the cam. Now, once you remove the cam cover, you'll see 3 main gears. The bottom right is the pinion gear driven by the motor. Top center and largest gear is the cam. The gear to the far left is the breather gear. All 3 gears are lined up by a "dot" mark on each gear (the cam has 2 marks, one for each of the other 2 gears it sets between). The breather gear just pulls straight out. I still have my breather gear in my '05, so I'm not sure what the advantage is for using the reed style breather. Since it's not gear driven, there's no mark to line up but you'll still need to line up the cam and pinion gear marks when you re-assemble.

OK, here is the TP Timing cover that BDM started using in 2005 on most models...





Here is the S&S style or old style cover that was used on BDM bikes prior to 2005 except the chopper, they still used this cover through 2005...





As for the S&S reed valve breather, I have heard that it was in very few 2005's, and in a chunk of 2006's.
I don't know that they ever went over to the reed breather 100%.
I have not taken apart a bike newer than 2005 to find one, but when I called BDM years ago,
they told me they used them.

So, I think the only way to find out is tear it down.

What is the advantage of using the reed style breather? What are the consequences of using the stock gear breather? :confused:

No real pros or cons. They say the reed breather is cleaner and less oil blow back.
I was going to put one in my bike, BDM said it had one in it when I called them, never ordered one, tore it down to do the cam install and it didn't have a reed breather in it.

A bit pissed, I said screw it! Finished with my install.

The 05 I have has the old style S&S cover (most likely no reed-valve). I'll be tearing it down this winter & will add 1 while it's apart.

My 07 K9 had neither!!!!!!:confused::eek::bang:

I put the gear driven one in while doing the cam change...

Anybody ever have issue's with their timing cover? I fractured 4 of the 6 bolts off as in the bolts heads sheering off leaving me with just threads in the hole. Oil blew everywhere and my shop said they've never seen anything like this in all their years of experience. Don't know what the diagnosis will be to get them out but, certainly not interested in putting the same type of bolt back into the case....

My 05 with the TP style cover had the gear driven breather
My 08 with the TP style cove had the reed valve breather.

I liked the reed valve style just because you don't have to line it up with the cam marks (which is no big deal to do) And because the reed valve style in not turning I figure its just one thing less to ever have to deal with.
