I have been reading and studying all that’s up here and am a little confused I thought that the cylinder height was supposed to be 4.8888 on a stock S&S epa motor when I measured mine I come up with 4.50 cylinders from base where it bolts to the cases all the way up to where the head gasket is placed pistons come up to 50 thousands at TDC in the jug also measured the head gasket and it was 50 thousandths squished so has someone already been in and decked???, I also have the red strip valve springs with another set inside so do I need to replace??? I started with a frame from ebay on this one and wanted to sees how cheep I could build a K9 off the internet. I have everything now bought and am at 7800 bucks including paint

From what I have seen and heard on here, most all motors are different in deck hight. Mine measured 0.0465. I don;t think yours has been milled yet. The Red Stripe springs should have that inter spring in there and are good for at least a 600 cam.

Here is what I did, instead of milling the cylinders I decided to mill the Heads 0.030 and use the comatic 0.030 head gaskets, and 0.010 base gaskets. That alone cut the deck hight in half. Plus I had the head ported, went to the 2.00 intake valve and the 1.605 exhaust valve and also had the Squish groves cut on the heads. That put me at about 10.2 to one compression, which is where I wanted to be in order to use pump gas. Had I milled the cylinders I would of ended up with close to 11 to one compression which means I would have to run racing fuel at about $6.50 to $7.00 bucks per gallon and that sucks. I increase the compression just enough to be able to use the Woods 650 cam & Springs. I also changed out the stock Thunder Heart to the programmable Thunder Heart, I run timing at 4 Degrees advance and no pinging yet. The dog runs strong, I will try to get her on the dyno soon.
