Top motor mount

Hello all

Quick question. I have issues with my bike at the moment and I think it might be being caused by interference between the coil and the knock / temp sensors bolted in to the heads (IST ignition) due to lack of decent clearance.

I have taken out the two coil bracket bolts from the heads and used a long bolt with spacers for the top coil mount so that the coil / bracket is away from the motor - so I have one bolt holding the coil assembly on and the motor is not bolted to the top of the frame at all. The only way I can check if this solves my problem is going for a decent length ride, maybe an hour or so.

Do you think it is safe to ride the bike like this?

when the top motor mount bolt came out of my Pitbull it had a lot of vibration and the motor was stock

No, you dont run it with the top motor mount off.

maybe a stock bike but not an hour with your cam.

i have a crack at a headbolt in that same cover and found my inner primary to case was missing a bolt. and thats with every thing tight.


no way to shield the sensors?

You probably won't go very far from the vibration. It will be bad with out the top mount.

Lee with the knock sensor! Is it possible you have something loose causing this sensor to retard? Just thinking here! Or do you think its heat related?

Marv - I could look into that as a temporary measure

05 - my guess is that its heat related

looks like I'm going to have to make some sort of bracket for now so that I can test it

Is there a way to jump it out for the time being. I guess not cause you need it in line to test i would think.

yeah TJ the bikes runs but seems to intermittently lose a cylinder. When the bike was in the shop it was noticed there was some arcing, I think between the HT leads and the sensors - the fit was very tight in there so before I get something proper made up I need to make sure this cures the problem.

It sounds like you have an idea what it may be. Not to argue or anything but wouldn't a HT or knock sensor take the whole machine down? Both heads.
I'm sure you've already checked your plug wires and such. Sounds more coilish to me.

Not a good idea Lee!!! I would be afraid of the vibration issue, hell half these guys can’t keep that bolt tight??? Myself I haven’t. Good luck....:2thumbs:

Hope you sort it out lee, if thats the problem a permanent fix would be to change out the stock motor mount/coil mount then you can use different spacers to clear the sensors.

Lee, keep us informed of what you find out. My first guess would be a spark plug wire rubbing on the cooling fins.

My IST has been running fine and I'm pretty happy with it.

yea, a couple shim spacers at the 3 mount points.

try to take up all the slack.

probably why i got a crack at one point. not shimmed tight enough.

Yea mines got spacers/washers maybe 1/16"-3/32"

I well and truly fucked it today - stripped the threads in the top motor mount. Thats quite enough of that for one day - what a waste of a day off work. I need to look at the tits thread immediately.
