Too Much Oil ???

I thought I'd do an ol walk around on my 2005 BD Chopper lastnight. You know tighten a few bolts, check air pressures, that sort of thing. I checked oil and it appeared to be a little low according to what i've read about checking this model so I added about a third of a quart which brought it to where it's suppose to be right?? Well this morning I took off to do some errands and I'm riding along thinking who the hell is spraying for bugs this time of day?? It's my bike, smoking like crazy and smelling like burning oil. so I get it back home thinking I've overfilled the darn thing, pull the oil cap off and it's right where it was before i put oil in it. I checked it at operating temp with the bike level of course. Somebody that knows please chime in here and tell me this is no big deal and the smoking and smelling will go away in my sleep tonight.........yes?........please......... Please advise

When you added oil was the engine warm or cold?
When you checked it again was it warm or cool?

Over filling wouldnt make it burn more just over flow the tank and make your back tire break free riding on oil.
Is the oil comming from your air intake. I always have to clean my air filter and intake when I run hard

Sounds like you overfilled it. The best time to check the oil is right after you ride it. Sometimes the oil will drain from the tank back into the engine sump and the tank will give a flase low level when cold.

I always check oil when engine is at operating temp, with bike level. Smoke is cominmg out of tail pipe.:bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

your air cleaner cover is probably soaked and the filter too. oil then dripps out the bottom of the cover and blows back on the pipes. It's gonna smoke till you burn it off or take it to a car wash.

You overfilled it then. The excess oil is getting pushed out into the breather as Daddyyo said.

Well after the smoke has cleared.......he he he. I also emailed factory yesterday just to ease my nerves. No permanent damage, as a matter of fact smoke has already gone away with no oil build up in breather at all, just as clean as a whistle. Back tire and wheel are a mess but nothing a good washing won't fix. Not a good advertisment for Big Dog I'm afraid, nice beautiful bike going down the road surrounded by gray smoke. LOL. Live and learn right fellow doggies?? The gentelman from factory that emailed me back had something interesting to say I thought. He said to check oil when on the stand............not level like I've been doing??? Doesn't the manual say the opposite?? Anyway just thought I'd throw this up for everybody to read in case someone else has done the same thing....or is thinking about it. Thanks All

I have an 05 chopper BDM frame and my manual contradicts itself. If first says on the stand on softail models and then it says level and straight up. I have always filled mine to the bottom of the filler neck while at operating temp, level, and straight up. No problems!

sticker on my fill cap says check on the stand and that is exactly what I thought when I started reading this thread

here's mine and its different in the manual, however BD says go buy the cap and it don't matter if its hot or cold.

This is exactly what i do Ruff but still managed to overfill...........then spray bugs for awhile. looked like a crop duster going down the road.
