To Flip or Not To Flip

Hey, now there's a cool idea, Gas - a ROTATABLE license holder. Instead of the folding one that BDM has, make one that can easily flip back and forth.
Then you could also run a nos line to it with a internal propeller and make it spin like a old 3 stooges bow tie...

No seriously, Cav might be able to do something. I just hooked him up with my plate parts for some reverse engineering.

All you need is a pivot point then a detent (spring loaded ball)! Bada Bing Bada Boom.

Gas has a sorta good idea, not the stooges. More like James Bond. The prick pulls ya over and you hit a button and like a switch blade Boom Level. Then as he is walking back to his cruzer scratching his head  Boom Virt again!!

After reading through this thread, I decided I might want to FLIP my plate vertical to see how it looks. I looked at the mount and it appears to only mount horizontal. There is a bracket that mounts to an eye on the frame. I have a 2003 Chopper. Is there a kit to buy that allows it to mount vertical or do I have to take the plate out of the holder and change the mount of the plate holder on the existing bracket?

And is there enough wire there to do this without having to splice or rerun another longer wire?

You guys have the experience. Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Hey Don.....
I am not sure if the bracket is the same on the 03 chop's......when you take off your plate....are there any pre-drilled holes there? if not ....you should be able to just drill and counter sink the holes......here is Gas's how to on that...

http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/2047-how-flip-your-plate.html

you shouldn't have to do anything with the wires as far as like cutting them...but then again...I haven't seen the 03 tag bracket set-up....
hope that helps...

Thanks Dave. I'll take the plate off and take a look. I was just lazy last night when I looked at it and had to get to bed. I didn't want to start a project then, or I'd be up for another hour or two.

Where's Kimball, Michigan. I'm originally from MI. Grew up aroung the NW Detroit area and move to FL in 2002. My last home was in Novi, MI.

Vertical plate

I checked one time with a local cop I happen to know, and he confirmed that it is illegal in WA to have a vertical plate - but as KnotSo said, I don't think they ever bother to ticket for it - never heard if it happening.
I did the research and a phone call to WSP. Didn't want to give Leo a reason and so my plate is still stock. Here is the link to the WA state law:

LINK

There is the clause that gives you room for arguement: "In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol." Seems you might argue, in the case of a true custom, that the vertical is integral to a custom build. I wouldn't think that our factory custom bikes would pass muster in a court. All it takes is one asshole Leo. In the 1970's, I would get pulled over constantly, to the point I would figure in extra time to trip across town. I had a showcase chopper in those days and they just "knew" it had to be a stolen bike. It gets old real fast...

I took the plate off and removed the assembly from the bracket, but the holes don't line up. There is enough wire there to allow a 90 degree turn of the plate holder. But there might be a problem with the dremelled out passage way for the wire going in the wrong direction. I only had a few minutes today to look at as we had to go to Venice Beach to meet friend.

Tomorrow I have to go see my Tat lady to fix my tat where I had some surgery and it needs to be filled in. I wish it were Pixie or Kat working on it. Busy busy busy... never a dull moment.

I was born in Detroit and lived in Highland Park until 1952. Then moved to West Bloomfield when that was farm country. I lived in Farmington, Southfield and then Novi before moving to Florida. Retired from Ford Motor.
