To Chrome or not to Chrome

QUESTION:

Wow, $75 for the small Zoop kit? Is it really worth that much?
ANSWER:

Personal opinion of course but i could not stand to have to polish my wheels and pulley anymore so i went with chrome. Too many busted knuckles and shit from polishing. Now just hit them with non ammonia based glass cleaner and a paper towel and bright and shiny.
But you don't use glass cleaner... just quick detailer like you use on your paint. Wipe off and go. Now more polishing.

$75 vs $2k++

BigDogBro1

Made in the USA
The chrome works for me and BigdogBro2, 2600mi first season.

Paper towels scratch chrome - use microfiber cloths and detailer spray.
Seatmaker recovered the black factory seat in faux gator.

I had chromed:
All upper and lower control components
Shift rod link
Front forks and tripletrees
Fender brackets
Brake calipers and mounts
Wheels and hubs
License plate holder & bracket
Trans RH drive cover
Belt rotor pulley
S&S Timing covers
STD BDM Chromed Pegs
Speedo & bracket
Headlight mount & bracket
V&H BR exhaust frame mount

I think that's it? Bro2's is the same.
Seatmaker did the Stingray and black leather (surf & turf) seat.
Seatmaker is one of our pack riders!

The chrome was done by Meclec's in California.

Red Bull, was at the shop today and took a look at your bike, very nice. love the paint has alot more metal flake than mine. Overall I think your new baby looks great. All those little things that are wrong are just that, little things, they will take care of you. By the way if you are in the shop check out my bike, got all the chrome back and it is freakin awesome........In case anyone is curious I had the rims, hubs, rotors, calipers, caliper bracket, pulley and front fender bracket done. Total cost including shipping and labor was $ 2700.00. Meclec out of CA did the chrome Now just waiting on my side covers to be replaced and the rocker box switch out. Everyone have a great new year. !!!!!!!!!

I have chrome and I haven't had any problems keeping them clean. But then again I live in SC with not snow or salt. No matter what you get you have to keep after them.

I suggest Browns.

First off they are done locally not like meleck that sends ALL of their shit to mexico.

Second, browns has a true show quality chrome. Not blueing or gold tones. Plus they only do MC parts, and they know the parts and what to chrome and not to chrome. This is important.

Here's a thread I made on my chromed parts.

http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/customizing/2284-chroming-prices.html

However, browns won't do rims. Too many problems.

Is there a mothers type of polish to get out the oxidation in the Aluminum??
Which Mothers is best???....

I will polish mine....no Chrome here..lol...

I found the best stuff to use is Mother's billet polish. Expensive, but works well.

Powder coat is not perfect either.

I have some flaking on my rear rim.

If we get my other issues fixed I will have to redo it.

My wheels are getting hazey, too.

I have had them done for about two years.

If you have to redo them three time as much, it is not a third of the cost. (not bitching, just saying) :hi:

Don't know, don't really care at this point. That was the look I wanted, that is the look I got. If I have to redo powder coat every two years like I have to change my battery......whatever. Just as long as i can ride it when I want.

Yeah but the chrome could also be chipping. Its a no win situation as part of customizing.

I'm curious to hear what the company in Fresno charged for the chrome job. I f*cking HATE trying to keep these polished rims clean. What a pain in the ass. I've used several chromers over the years for my bikes. And, I agree with Gas Man about Brown's Plating. They are by far the best out there. But, the only downside is they don't do rims. I think I'll probably bite the bullet and get mine chromed this winter. But, I want to do my homework first, because there are a lot of lousy chrome shops out there. I've had rims chromed before, and have had mixed experiences.

Any suggestions on who does the best work out there?
