Hey guys...first let me take a moment to say "Thank you" for all the great information that's been posted over the years. So far, my only contribution has been to highlight how to 'Screw Something Up'. Maybe that will at least provide a warning or two of what NOT TO DO!
Anyway, I've been reading alot, basically just browsing the different topics. I needed brake pads and saw some recommendations for Lyndall Brake Pads. I called them up to find out the difference between each category. I've had quite alot of brake dust with my current pads (I don't know what brand they are). So i wanted a pad with minimum dust, and excellent braking. The sales rep told me their 'Gold Plus' pads were the best for what I was asking about, with 30% better stopping than their standard pads. Well, I'm almost 60 now, don't respond as quickly as I once did, and after a couple of cold one's...you get the picture. The pads were $90 a set; probably a waste of money, but I just felt better going for the best when it comes to safety. I bought 2 sets, front and back...with a military discount it came to $189. Ouch!
Next...it looks like the rear tire is about due for a change. The tread in the center is about gone. Question: If I really get on the throttle, the tire loses traction and gets a little squirrelly on me. Even in 3rd gear, it will still break lose. It would seem to me that even with a worn tire, I should be getting better traction. So, I don't know if I should just be happy that the bike has enough power to do this, or...I need a better gripping tire. I'm running an AVON right now. I've read the old posts on tires and it seems that Metzelor was the favorite. So, those posts are years old now. Also, AVON has a newer Cobra Chrome tire that is advertised as better. I'd appreciate any recent experience/advice. As I mentioned earlier, at my age I want the best/safest tire I can find, regardless of price.

I had the Cobra by Avon and it seemed like I was only able to get about 4,000 max as far as mileage, I'm running the shanko 300 on my bike now and it seems to handle and grip better than the Avon in my opinion. I have about 1,700 mi on it and it still looks pretty damn new and that's taking it to thunder and the smokies which is a lot of twisty riding and Myrtle Beach bike week which really wasn't much riding at all. Mostly because of the gas shortage at the time. Not sure what you're putting it on but for what someone or a few people told me the Metzler actual 300 is like 320 mm so it may hit your belt check on the size of the tire before you buy The Avon is closer to 300 the shanko is very close to the Avon width but the messler is a little wider even though it's a 300

Thanks...that belt rub issue on the Metzler really bothers me. I read where someone sanded the edge down to solve the problem. I would be afraid of altering or damaging the overall integrity of the tire. I'm thinking that especially at the sidewall, the tire isn't designed to be shaved down. So, although the tire may out perform the AVON, I would prefer to avoid any side rub issues.

I'm interested in the Cobra Chrome, but I'd like to hear from a few more guys that switched. Appreciate the info.

I must have missed the part about what bike & wheel size was being talked about. I have the Avon Cobra Chrome on my ridgeback & love it. But on my chopper I have a 180 Bridgestone radial rear & Dunlop front. Also very good rubber I would say handling wise.

I bought the bike 10 months ago so I don't know how many miles I got out of the current AVIN COBRA. It seemed to wear pretty fast, but as I stated earlier I've been riding pretty hard. This bike is still new to me so I'm still learning/experimenting with everything. Example; I thought the decel-pop was excessive so I reset the carb using the S&S instructions. WOW!!! What a difference. I not only reduced the pop, but made extraordinary gains in acceleration. So much that I think I burned off about 20% of the rear tread! I love the incredible power I'm getting now, but I would love to improve on traction. I don't plan to normally ride this hard. I'm just trying to get everything adjusted properly and then I'll know what to expect with performance. Question: Is it normal to lose traction in 3rd gear when I get on it hard (3/4 throttle)?
So, back to the tire. As far as I can tell, BDM stuck with the AVON COBRA throughout the K9 production eo it would appear the engineers were happy with this tire. I'm leaning towards the Cobra Chrome, mainly because it's simply an improvement on the original. I don't put many miles on the bike, usually just hit 2 or 3 watering holes around town. So my priorities in a tire are:
1. Safety/Reliability
2. Traction (Dry pavement)
3. Durability/Longevity
4. Price (I'm certainly not rich, but if there's a tire that won't break traction at 3/4 throttle, I'd be willing to pony up the $$$

I'm not in a hurry to do this, I've still got about 1,000 miles of tread left so I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks

Well Brother Avon Cobra Chrome is the one you want to have for that sled. They are a quality product. Cheers to many great rides! :chopper:

While your changing tires you should also replace the wheel bearings. It's a bit of a process to do it right but a good time to do it.
