Tires and Oil Filters

Hi All,

I wanted to ask if anyone knew the exact Oil Filter for my 2003 Chopper, I read about the K&P but it is a little pricey for me at the moment because I need tires as well. So does anyone know what Harley oil filter will work, I have the S&S 107. Also I am trying to find Tires and I will probably go with the Avon Cobra to replace my Venom's I have now but I like the Dunlop as well and they are so much less than the Avon's. They have a great looking tread for the rear tire, I think even nicer than the Cobra tires but the front 90/90 21 is Bias and the rear is a Radial. I have no clue what Bias means as far as tires go but the sales person didn't have a clue either and said she doesn't think I can run them like that. The price is 154.99 for the 250/40-18 V rated tire and I think the other one is 74.99. So If I can save money for now I am willing to do that, if not I will go with the Cobra's..

Thanks,
Bobby

Well I have a 04 Chopper 107CI. The filter for mine is: Harley # 63796-77A A Fram filter # is PH6065B. Both are chromed. Hope this helps. As for the tires I went with a Avon. But I have heard good stuff about Dunlop and Metzer. I guess its a matter of personal preference.

Thanks, that helps a lot and I will go with the c. Does anyone know what Bias Ply means and if that is okay? I like the look of the Dunlop tire so I would like to go that route, just don't know about Radial or Bias..

BroadBand

Since late 60's
Radial and bias tires vary in their construction. The plies, or layers, of a radial tire run on a 90-degree angle to the center of the tire.
This causes the plies to overlap, resulting in more flexibility and longer tread life. The plies of a bias tire run on a 45-degree angle to the
center of the tire, causing the plies to crisscross. This results in construction that is less flexible and has shorter tread life.

Radial tires last longer than bias tires, and they are more versatile, offering better handling and wear characteristics.
The flexible construction of bias tires provides less stability at higher speeds. You also get more miles out of a radial tire vs. a bias tire...

Thanks Broadband, I have never heard of bias until I started looking for new tires today. Seems there is no reason to go with bias t save 35 bucks. I like the look of the Dulop rear tire and that one is radial, the front that matches isn't. I can't believe the prices online compared to the local shop, I have found the Avon Cobra for 218.00 with free shipping, Life Style Cycles has the same tire for 499.00 and they want 90 to mount it which is a little steep I think.

Thanks for the info, I haven't been on the forums for a while because I am always busy doing nothing so it is good to be back. It is that time of year and time to ride again, I haven't changed my oil in 2 years or done any work on it, I have been riding a lot and know how stupid I am for not changing the oil etc... She leaks and I always keep it full and my oil looks fresh so I guess that is the main reason I haven't had it done. I am not sure where to start, I am sure it is easy but I have never done it, I need to find a manual online and go from there.

I run Dunlop elite 3 on both front and rear of my 04 ridgeback and love them. Probably 4500 miles on them and no show of wear at all.

I use Metzeler's, they wear fast but stick well. Also have been using K&N oil filter, but, interestingly, despite Broadband saying he uses K&N part # 170C, I've always used their 171C. Wonder what the difference is?

I had 10,130 miles on my original front Avon but changed it last weekend. Its born on date was week 45 of 2006 and I wanted a fresh tire for the summer.

If you are running the 107 ci,you gotta go with the 170c,there is a lotta threads on this topic.

The KN171 is designed for the twin cam bikes. You should run the 170 designed for the Evo motors like we have

RE:two previous posts- I SINCERELY appreciate the advice and will continue to investigate. But since I've always had the 171 on my bike with no problems, I'm curious what the practical and mechanical differences are between the 170 and 171. K & N 's website was no help in shedding light on this subject. Any clues ?

There is a difference between evo and twin cam motors, they supply the oil in a diff. way. There is a special valve built in one of the filters, just call S&S and they will explain it properly, good luck:up:
