Been lookin for a new shoe for my K9. I'm a little confused on the Avons. I have found a venom for around 240. Is this a good deal? I'm confused between the venoms and cobras. The cobras suck but the venoms are good? Also looking at metzlers but they are more expensive. I am looking mostly for high mileage. Any others I should research?

I went with the Metzler on my K9. Might be more expensive, but would def recommend it.

And what up to another Utah guy

I don't believe they make the venoms anymore... I just bought the cobra's last week... I love them!
At least they don't make the venom 250 for my Mutt anymore. That is what I had when I bought the bike new. I had to go with the cobras now... and they are great.

Lots of folks having catastrophic failures with the cobras. Don't know if failures are size specific....

Go with Metzler I went through 4 cobras and they have some serious problems.I called Avon and there in total denial that there's a problem. I've got 5000 on my Metz and it still looks new.

Metzler came stock on my '04 Mastiff. They wear out fast but are made of a softer compound, which usually means they stick better in the turns. Never let me down. I'd rather pay a little more and replace the tire more frequently than lay the bike down in a corner, because it FUCKIN' HURTS, plus it costs more in the long run replacing all the shit you just tore up trying to save a couple of bucks. Don't worry about the mileage, worry about your life.

You got a couple choices with the 250 - A lot of guys having problems with the New Avons, I would stick with the Metzler or try the Dunlop out, just not sure about the clearance as its .12" wider. Not sure if anyone has personal experience with them, I was considering them for a few months when time is due for a new tire.

Its tough to beat Dennis Kirk prices on tire.

Avon Cobra 250 - $221.95 - https://www.denniskirk.com/avon/rear-cobra-av72-250-40vr-18-blackwall-tire.p543349.prd/543349.sku
Inflated Width 9.9"

Metzler - 240mm Rear - $197 - https://www.denniskirk.com/metzeler...40vr-18-blackwall-tire.p540745.prd/540745.sku
Inflated Width - 9.4"

Dunlop E3 250 - $171 https://www.denniskirk.com/542755.sku?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse
Inflated Width 10.02

They say that Metzler did their sizing differently on purpose.

It's a 300. As far as I can tell my choices are between the cobra and metzler. When I bought it the guy had a new cobra on it. What to do what to do.

Sorry bro I totally fuckin misread your post for some reason I thought you had a new K9 2011 250 :spank:

Sorry I was at work :loony:

Everything applies to you except you can scratch the Dunlop

I went through 2 Cobras in 3000 miles. Only got 1200 miles out of the last Cobra. Put it on on a thursday and by monday the tread splice was splitting open (again). I'm now running a Metzler. I've only put 1000 miles on it so far. But it seems to be holding up good. I can't tell any difference in the ride or handling in the two.

Alan, how long ago was that?

For anyone interested. I am serving myself up as the next test/experiment for the Cobras. The front went on just before Daytona. The rear went on yesterday. Build dates are mid 2011.

Here's what they will be put through... I'm not big on hard launches. I am big on working the twists. With that said, Florida roads have about 18 turns total. Luckily, about 12 of them are on the coast road coming and going from my home. So daily I get to do some serious trail braking going in, and hard exits off the apexes. Once beyond my little fun patches it will be a lot of center tire wear in the heat. Add sun, humidity, and Gulf air... this should be quite the test.

Got the order. It will go out in the morning.
Thanks!:2thumbs:
Can I put the beads in after my tire is mounted? I don't trust the shop to put them in. I'm just worried about taking out the valve stem and not being able to get the tire to seat. Is this an issue?

Yes, you can put them in after the tire is mounted. Just be careful when you let the air out. My bike sat straight up on the rim and I thought she was going over. Just unscrew the valve core and pour the beads in using the tube and bottle. Took me all of ten minutes. Good luck, they work great. Got mine from Mad Dog too, what fast service!!

If you can get it up in the air when you let the air out that is best.
Your order is on its way.
Thanks
