Tire Plugs

I get the same answer from the tire places about plugging a car tire. I even have a kit and the plug is a tar impregnated rope like material. The tire shops tell me those plugs dry out after a while. In the old days working in a gas station we used a rubber plug dipped in glue, installed the same way.....those plugs lasted for the life of the tire. I had tires with 2-3 plugs.

That being said....relying on one tire keeping my ass of the pavement, I think a little differently. I would plug my tire on a trip, probably rely on it for several hundred miles, but I would replace the tire at the shop I know will do the job right, and with the best tire.

Maybe I am thinking wrong! But I would feel comfortable with plugging a tire on a trip and then removing it to place a patch on the inside when I got home. I would then monitor the tire pressure frequently until comfortable and forget about it until the Tire needed replacing (i.e. go back to normal tire pressure monitoring).
