Tight Gas Cap

The gas cap on my 2004 Bigdog Bulldog is tight. It is hard to twist on and off. Are you supposed to lubricate the plastic threads on the gas cap or anything?

I wouldn't add any "lube" into your fuel system access. Check to make sure there is not "gunk" in the threads. If you want to loosen it up a bit you can always wrap a piece of sandpaper around the plastic threads and twist it a bit. Just do a little at a time though, you don't want it sloppy.

Hmmm, are they the stock caps?

If so, I would try maybe a scotchbrite pad and some rubbing, see if that helps.

I know it is recommended that your lube o-rings on the caps that have them to ensure a good seal, but the stock caps don't have that, besides, the o-ring shouldn't interfere with the threading process.

Try the scotchbrite pad and see how that works.

Mine did the same thing. Got to were it was almost impossible to remove. Try lightly sanding down the threads a little. I put a light coat of lube on the threads and it helped a little. This is how I finally solved the problem:

Thanks for the tips. Mine is really tight too almost too tight to remove. Since I am not the only one who has had this problem, wonder what causes it?

I suggest putting a small bit of petroleom jelly on the threads. Will fix ya right up and not only is it petro based, cheap, easy to come by, it won't drip into the tank or anything bad. GREAT product to keep in the garage.

The plastic on the factory gas caps after some time starts to swell as a reaction to the gas fumes. Even if you sand or scotchbrite pad it, it will continue to swell.

As shown above, my replacement gas caps are 100% billet with no plastic parts so they will never swell. They are also vented like the stock one.

All 3 styles are in stock now.
